Just as Smoger mistook all those knockdowns and power punches ragdolling him around the ring for a sign that Pederson was, well, getting knocked down and ragdolled around the ring.

He should have just looked in his puppydog eyes and ket him keep going.

Nobody here still had defended the notion of Smoger just waiving his hands and stopping it after the 3rd knockdown.

Why just not give Peterson the 8 counts. Smoger could have assessed and stopped it if he wished after administering the 8 count.
    Why did'nt he???

Thats my beef with Smoger, give Peterson the 8 count and if he still feels he's had enough, stop it, but give him that courtesy.

After the stoppage, video shows Peterson talking to Smoger and pointing to his own head as if trying to convey to Smoger that mentally he was clear headed and wanted to continue.
This was not a case of Peterson being defenseless.

Unless it's about Barrera,I don't often disagree with Divac but IB's comment about Smoger echoes exactly what I was thinking when I watched the stoppage.
In fact,I'm sure it crossed my mind that Peterson was allowed to carry on because it was Smoger.

No. PEDerson was being raped. There is no "too soon" when stopping a ****.

Smoger could have stopped it after the first knockdown in the 3rd when he tried to get up and rolled on the canvas

You know a fighter is hurt badly when there is a delayed reaction to a punch. Peterson took about 1-2 seconds to actually feel the damage from the hook that grazed his forehead and caused the first knockdown.

Smoger could have stopped it after the first knockdown in round 3. PEDerson was on unsteady legs when he got up.

What good reason did Smoger have not to have given Peterson a count after the 3rd knockdown?

Had Peterson got walloped and his body went limp, go ahead and stop it.
In the case of the 3rd knockdown Peterson goes down more from the pressure Mathysse is bringing more than any actual punch he landed.

You would not have given Peterson a count under such circumstances?

Have you all forgotten that Peterson has a history of fighting back?

It looked early on like Peterson was going to get dismantled by Victor Ortiz in fact was down twice in round 3 and he fought back valiantly and won the 2nd half of the fight.

Got dropped by Khan in round 1 and looked like it would end early and he came back.

Seems to me that Peterson has troubles early, settles, and gives great goes of it given the chance.

    Exactly.

It's not the ref's job to decide how the fight has been going, only the condition of the fighter at that exact moment.

Not giving him the eight count was Smoger saying "I don't think you can win, based on the first three rounds, so even though you're up I'm going to protect you by not giving you a chance to recover, even though the rules dictate that I should."

    Complete BS.

Smoger goes to seminars where they discuss all sorts of things boxing related. He said he allowed Pavlik to continue against Taylor because he knew it was an equilibrium shot and Kelly could recover from that based on what he had learned in a seminar. He was giving Pederson a chance to recover and he went down again because he wasn't able to defend himself properly. Game over.

The 2nd nock down, from the monster hook. I recall Peterson trying to get up and stumbles. Smoger was looking at stopping it at that point but let him continue. Gave Peterson a very long time in the corner before saying fight. Which didn't last long before another hook sent him to the canvas. Smoger is not a ref that stops fight premature.
