Most overrated boxing matches of all time

exactly my thoughts. although surely a great fight it is by many regarded as one of the few greatest and it was too short. round 1 is up there though as one of the very best rounds ever.

it's still a great fight but not THE best as it is often called. there are other better wars

 

Quartey vs De La Hoya is up there.

Two good rounds and the rest of the fight was nothing to shout about. I remember being underwhelmed after being recommended to watch it.

 

I agree. Mediocre fight...Holyfield clinching Tyson all the time...one of most bored fights i ever see...

 

castillo-corrales 1. liked it enough, maybe top 10 of the decade. i thought cotto-torres was better to be honest. i watched it right away, bought a copy and still have understood the accolades. imo it would need a ladder to kiss gatti-ward 1's ass

 

Foreman vs Lyle. People talk about this fight like it was a non-stop back and forth brawl from the opening bell, but the first few rounds were relatively quiet. Crazy last two rounds though, if a bit sloppy.

Castillo vs Corrales. A very good fight, don't get me wrong, but doesn't live up to the incredible expectations that one may have seeing only the last round. A bit too much phone booth stuff for my liking as well.

Tua vs Ibeabuchi. Another phone booth fight that doesn't entirely live up to expectations. Very good in spurts, but quite slow in a lot of others.

Hagler Hears. Truly awesome action packed fight, but greatest fight ever? Sorry, too short, and a wee bit too one sided after the first.

Lennox vs Vitali. Good back and forth brawl with a lot of high excitement, but just too slow and sloppy for me to truly enjoy.

 

honestly yeah. there's been plenty of brawls over the years, plenty of skilled back and back and plenty of high drama. i don't think this one was at the top for any of it.

the last round wasn't that great either (now i sound like an *******). two knockdowns were cool, then corrales stalled by spitting out his mouthpiece and then the TKO

i'll take the 3 minutes of gatti-ward round 9 any day over that entire fight

 

Dempsey-Firpo...I mean there were these dreadful lapses in between knockdowns, and how long did it take Dempsey to climb back into the ring after he went through the ropes? I thought it was an eternity...I mean. BOOOOOOORING.

Kidding.

It gets very ugly and awkward when they both gas in my opinion.

Great and gutsy performance, but not very exciting when they're both looking to take separate breaks.

Castillo-Corrales is played up for the amazing comeback. It's an excellent fight but an even better fable.

Leonard-Hearns. I greatly respect both fighters but sorry the fight wasn't that exciting, it was just a jab fest and the stoppage was a too early IMO Leonard-Hearns 2 was a much better fight

 

:rastano worries. it's all subjective anyway. I rag on castillo-corrales mostly cause of the massive expectations involved. and maybe that tainted me cause it was NEVER gonna live up to the hype. plus, gatti-ward was the first fight i sought out as a fan and the fight that truly got me into boxing. it'll always have that nostalgic, cherry popping charm to it

 

Watched Holyfield / Tyson again last night (as it would happen) - love that fight. It's not about the simple mechanics of the fight, it's the surrounding context too. It's hard now to see that fight for what it was - very few people picked Holyfield (but of course so many now say that they picked him and you could see what was going to happen etc Bull****). But Mike Tyson getting bullied, pushed around, pushed back onto the ropes, hit with clean shots - Holyfield not getting intimidated at any stage. The exchange of blows after the bell in the first is superb. Tyson couldn't find his rhythm, maybe one decent round when Tyson threatened to assert himself properly with his combinations of hooks and upper cuts on the inside. What a fight. Tyson saved by the bell in the tenth, finished early in the eleventh, comprehensively dominated throughout. It was over from then on as far as Tyson was concerned - like so many that went before him - the mystique was ruined.
