Who has the better overall defense: Danny Garcia or Lucas Mathysse?

    Lucas has good head movement while advancing, parries well, has a good guard, tucks his elbows in tight, angles his body, though he does lean in sometimes when stalking and looking for openings.

    Garcia on the other hand seems to maintain range better, rolls well with shots coming in from the outside and keeps his balance at all times, even when throwing his wide hooks. But he does seem much more stiff and square and upright, and more vulnerable to straight shots down the middle.

    Personally I'd give the slight edge to Mathysse. Despite landing less consistently on Judah, he didn't get so touched him himself. It's not a completely determinant factor, as styles make fights, but it is their only common opponent and there was a big difference in the amount of punishment they took. Also, Mathysse gets clocked on the top of the head a lot, but keeps his chin tucked very well in his guard.

    Garcia from what i've seen though he gets sloppy in the championship rounds.

    Zab didn't land much of anything on Garcia until Danny shot his load halfway into the fight yet failed to finish him off. If Garcia is stiff and upright, it's because he's a legit 5'8+" and uses his range to his advantage.

    Matthysse defends well enough, though he is susceptible to counters when he unleashes his left hook.

    I think that Danny's ability to change distance and angles give him a slight advantage in this category.

    This is the trade-off. Although he could still use his height from a more angled stance. But he likes to roll inwards and counter from the outside.

    garcia was picking khan shots out of the air like working on focus mitts. very impressed by the way he did that. khan was 3/4's there, and then garcia would block it, split second. go back and watch it again.

    but matthysse covers and moves well. no doubt. even though garcia will show him something way different

    He used his forearms to pick off Khan's ****.

    Garcia didn't allow Zab to get into the fight early on unlike Lucas.

    Garcia has his skin working against him. Lucas is durable like his Mexican brothers, but Garcia could be another paper faced Puerto Rican

    It's hard to judge Matthyse's defense since he rarely has need for it.

    His displays of defense are subtle. Like most skilled pressure fighters he doesn't get hit cleanly very often. He doesn't have the athleticism necessary for a flashy slick defense.

    Don't think either guy displays much defense, but I would give Garcia the edge.

    Every second they're in there, it's a concern. It's built into the way they fight. Not always a priority, but never not present.

    Round 2 of the Devon Alexander fight is a strong example of what I'm talking about.

    Lucas gets outboxed, looks silly, and walks back to his corner embarrassed. However, lot of the shots Devon landed didn't land on the "sweet spots"
