Yes officially he may have lost them but the majority of observors feel Matthysse won. When watching them myself I don't see them as fights where Matthysse was bested. I had him winning in both and therefore I treat them as such (wins for Matthysse). And no I'm not talking about him as an ATG or as Garcia as a bum especially when I've made it a point to note that Garcia himself deserves props.

I also forgot that the Peterson fight was not even at 140. Matthysse's losses were very close fights and I would have given him both fights if I was the judge. I think Matthysse is a very exciting fighter and I will be following his career and even rooting for him.

With regards to the hype surrounding him:
Just look at the amount of threads dedicated to Lucas at the moment.

The Peterson fight not being at 140 was bizarre I know. But it doesn't really do anything to detract from the fact that it was pretty much a fight between two junior welterweights. And it was only done so that MAtthyse could keep his interim belt wasn’t it? I think it’s reasonable to chalk that down as a 140 win.

And there being numerous threads on Matthysse is quite normal after there being an explosive win like that. Trying to make a case for him being number one of the division isn't overhyping him. However putting him in fantasy matchups with prime Pacquiao and saying he could beat Mayweather definitely is.

Even at 140 ? Lets not forget that only Peterson weighed in at 141. Then lets not forget that Peterson weighed 149 on the night and Matthysse 150.

I'm not saying he wasn't known, I've liked his fights before. But all of a sudden he's the next Pacquiao? I think he will go on to bigger fights, more exposure as his style and ko power will be easy to sell. I look forward to the Garcia fight, but the overnight hype is a bit crazy if not good for boxing. Lamont Peterson is no bum but he hadn't fought in almost 2 years had been riddled in all kinds of problems. plus has a questionable chin as he's been dropped a buch of times, I'm just not that impressed with this win. It may be my much deserved tainted view of Peterson.

The below is in no way a criticism of Garcia but rather an honest look at the type of opposition both men have demonstrated their qualities against. Garcias most notable wins that have made him the king of the division have been....

1) Holt
2) Morales
3) Khan
4) Judah

The one thing the above all share in common is that for one reason or the other (mentally or physically) they are all vulnerable to anyone with even the slightest bit of power or aggression. As a result this has made Garcias ability to punch and look like a killer, slightly exaggerated. Its also one of the reasons why hes never really been forced to use another style and why to the viewer he looks like he does the same thing and theres not much to his game. (Please note that this is not to suggest he cannot and does not adapt in fights. I believe he can do that. But hes never really needed to to much extent because of the type of people hes been beating).

On the other hand we have Matthysse....

1) Judah
2) Alexander
3) Soto
4) Olusegan
5) Peterson

Of course apart from Judah, those are fighters with proven toughness (mentally and physically) that Matthysse has walked right through. They may not have the high profile names that Garcias victims do, but I believe them to have been the more challenging foes on the night (well 2, 4 and 5 anyway). Alexander has a great chin and he put him on the canvas en route to a decision he should have won. Olusegan is and always has been greatly underappreciated and the type that no top junior welterweight wanted to deal with. Peterson despite having the tendency to be floored has NEVER been hurt the way he was and put away for good. And Soto despite his age and coming up in weight is also someone who has never been stopped (or even put on the canvas?). So those are genuinely tough guys that Matthysse has showcased his power against to prove that he IS the killer everyones projecting him as. And his evolution from Judah all the way up to Peterson has been quite impressive too. Hes shown the ability to box with the boxers and get the better of them (Judah and Alexander), as well as the hunter instinct to trap and brawl with both brawlers and boxers (Soto, Peterson and Olusegan).

Simply put... Matthysse over the past few years has been put on a slightly more challenging path of opponents and has still managed to be more destructive and impressive in his wins over them. For that reason I believe him to unofficially hold the number one spot of the division and I am happy for him to be getting the respect he deserves. Best of luck to him and I hope his success continues because hes the type of fighter this sport benefits from.

(Again the intention of this post is not to discredit Garcias achievements. He is a young fighter who has beaten everyone put before him and for that he also deserves props. I just feel at the moment Matthysse has proven to be the better fighter. Probably because hes been around longer than Garcia has to be fair. We need to remember Garcia is still pretty young and its only in the last year or so hes came to prominence and hasnt yet had a chance to fight opponents that are better than the ones hes dealt with so far).

Finally a reasonable Matthysse fan :good

Him vs Garcia is a fight what needs to happen and I expect to happen. Before the Peterson fight I would be 90% certain on a Garcia victory but now I'm not so sure.

But in regards to Matthysse being #1, it's similar in a way to what is going on at middleweight, alot of people think GGG would beat Martinez if they fought today (pretending Martinez isn't injured) but saying he is #1 in a division is jumping the gun, to be the man you've got to beat the man.

Disagree, Olesegun has never beaten a good fighter, not even one! He ain't ****. Soto was shot and way above his natural weight. Holt and Morales are actually far better wins than those 2. Garcia beat Judah more convincingly (I had Judah beating Matthysse but even if you think Matthysse won it was hella close and it wasn't close at all vs Garcia, just a late comeback that meant nothing.) So that leaves the KO of Peterson vs the KO of Khan who are both equal fighters as evidenced by their fight that could've gone either way. Slight edge to Danny in resume and clear edge in deserving to be the man at 140. A fight between them would be a cpick'em fight with a slight edge to Garcia imo
