the difference in oscars handspeed and footwork when he was at his peak and when he fought floyd and pac, is like 2 completely different fighters.
Most definitely. Blowing up in weight and trying to fight the likes of Hopkins was awesome, but I'm sure it hurt his body in the long run. Hopefully newer fighters will take after ODH when it comes to picking fights and trying to make a name for themselves.
No question that Oscar could string punches together like few in history and Floyd was wrong to try and play his game. Still, there's more openings within those flurries than I remembered. It sorta speaks to why he dispensed with them as he stepped up his comp.
He only flurried after dropping Ike with a well-placed hook and then only punched himself out for his trouble. If he were a smarter finisher, he might have been able to, well, finish him. As it was, Oscar would routinely flurry his way to TKO victories instead of setting up actual KO punches. Just a thought.
True. I'm Hispanic and while obviously he had a lot of fans, he also had a lot of haters too, especially in the Hispanic community after the Chavez fights. Most of those haters were men, though, and it seemed like the hatred had more to do with jealousy than his actual fighting. Its no secret the women loved him and I guess it bothered those guys for some reason. One thing I do miss about his fights was the buzz they generated, especially the Trinindad and Vargas fights. I went to numerous fight parties back in De La Hoya's time and they seem to have disappeared once he was done for good. Just not as much interest now, at least not at the level it was back then. In terms of his in ring skills, one thing I feel is underrated is his chin. The guy could take a good punch.
I used to be a big Oscar hater, but man I've come to appriciate him a lot since his retirement. I don' think we will ever see the biggest star and PPV draw in boxing, facing the biggest challenges out there.
