He has lost a lot of weight from 5 years ago. I remember when he fought Calzaghe he used to weigh in at 168lb and put on a good bit of weight for every fight.
I thought the yesterday, that he'd mabye made a ballsup in training. However looking at his weights on BoxRec over the last few years he's more often came in at 166 or 167 for his fights.
The whole second weigh in is pointless all it does is make them watch there weight between the official weighin and the one early this morning. Over the next 12+ hours they can gain as much as they want.
I'm surprised. Back in the day, he was rehydrating back up to 180-182. I also think he overshot with the dehydration. He looked weight-drained to me. I'm surprised he's going for a weight of maybe 174-175 on the night... Probably wants to be fast and to have plenty of juice in the last rounds, but if he screwed up the dehydration, he might suffer late on in the fight.
I disagree. The reason they're doing it is to protect fighters from dehydrating too much and then coming in 2-3 divisions over on the night. Best for the fighter and his opponent.
I agree with the principle of the idea but not the way it has been implemented. If they were concerned for a fighters health the second weigh in would be done as close to fight time as possible. But thats not going to happen because at that point the fight would never be called off at such a late stage. To give an example: Chavez jr comes in on fight night in the mid 180s. So he weighs in at 160 on the Friday. Then he weighs in at the maximum he's allowed (170) at the second weigh in early Saturday morning. By the time he comes to the ring 12+ hours later the guy will be in the 180s.
Well, left to his own devices, Jr would weigh in the mid 170s on the morning of the fight. It is precisely this kind of hard-core de/rehydration this second weigh-in prevents. Jr would be forced to make weight better under the IBF rules or he'd be forced to go up, imo.
He would be forced to be more careful about the rate he rehydrates between the two weigh-ins but it would not affect the overall weight he comes to the ring at.
