I say his 2 victories against James Toney (ATG) and his victory of Roy Jones Jr make a good case for him being an ATG himself. Also beat Ray Lathon who was very good in his prime (won numerous golden gloves and fought at olympics).
This is a joke, right? lol. I'll concede that Griffin wasn't necessarily a bad fighter, but he is not ATG material. He never beat RJJ.
Prior to beating Toney he beat 14 bums. AFter the first win over Toney he fought 10 bums then beat Toney again. Both wins over Toney were close... I give him full credit for two good performances though. After going 2-0 over Toney he fought Roy Jones Jr. He fought well but was dropped in the 7th round. He was dropped again in the 9th. Jones hit Griffin while he was taking a knee and was DQd. At thsi point he was 3-0 vs. Toney and Jones but his win over Jones was far from decisive and the wins over Toney were close. He fought Jones again 4 1/2 months later. Jones stopped Griffin in the 1st round and noone cared to see a 3rd fight between them. After the loss to Jones he beat Derrick Harmon W12 and George Jones W12. He lost to good fighters like Eric Harding LSD12, D. Michalczeski LKOby4, A. Tarver L12 (he looked pretty faded in this fight), Rico Hoye L12, J.C. Gonzalez LTD6, Glen Johnson LKOby11, and Beibut Shumenov L12. He also drew with trial horse Ross Thompson when both were 76 years old. All-time great? I can't say that with a straight face. If he wanted to be considered for that honor he should have retired after the win over Jones. 3-0 vs. Toney and Jones with no other decent wins.
When he was in his prime he was a great fighter...but he has come up short in most of his big fights. You gotta give him credit for beating Toney but he was on his way to getting stopped in the first Jones fight even though he was probably winning on the cards. Not HOF worthy IMO.
Yes he was. Griffin was outboxing Jones Jr and making him look amateurish a couple of times throughout their first fight. Seeing that a prime Roy Jones Jr is typically seen as some sort of unbeatable god, I would say Montell Griffin was great in his prime.
love montell great unique style. had jones and toney counting on their fingers for those ones. lack of genuine power and workrate got him outdone. but his technical skills and IQ is fantastic to watch. should get more credit against jones. he was outboxing jones and backing him up. i remember in the first fight and griffin was controlling jones at points. jab to the body jonesb backs up looking for the folllow up till jones unknowingly finds himself int he corner. very good trickster and technician. lots of praise from me.
Great fighter, didn't achieve great things. Has an argument for being ahead against Jones when the DQ came down. Clear foul on Roy's part, hard to call it accidental(Hit him twice, second time with some wind up.) Great ability, style oozed schooling, pinpoint accuracy, great counters, exceptional economy of movement and footwork. No jab, punched wide at times, didn't pivot on his counters(robbed him of power). Had some great wins, but didn't put together the CV, all around, to get the ATG label from me. Needed a few more signature nights at the office, and the blowout losses to Jones and Tarver sting him.
it was close but remember that jones was p4p#1 and was really just throwing anything he had to keep montell honest....and at times it wasnt working. when it settled down montell was playing 3 card monte with him. it was the reason jones threw that combo when he was on the floor he was frustrated and worried.
