Dr Jack Matthews OBE, Welsh rugby centre beat Marciano wartime, although they gave it as a draw [both on the same side fighting for the allies and all that], but everybody knew that Dr Jack was the better man and his game was rugby unlike Marciano who's game was boxing of course, Dr Jack was about 5'3'' and Marciano 5'11'', Marciano was roughly the same height as Calzaghe but Calzaghe had a longer reach 73'' plays 67''.

If Marciano couldn't beat a Welshman who was not a boxer then he would be in trouble against one that was and one that was more his own size as well.

I don't know where to start . Ever heard of "styles makes fights"? Or have you ever considered that it was doing Rocky's time in the army, don't you think that the Marciano who destroyed Walcott was a little bit better than the one who boxed in the army?

I despair on here sometimes. I like Calzaghe I admire all he achieved but he would be annihalated here.
They talk about Joe's ring smarts giving him the edge well Ezzard Charles who was probably the greatest Light Heavyweight who ever lived certainly wasn't short on those but the Rock overcame him twice.
Calzaghe simply wouldn't have remotely faced anyone possessing the strength, power, fitness and intensity of Marciano.
    He wouldn't stand a chance.

Marciano was overhyped and fought a lot of dubious quality, he couldn't handle a Welshman literally walking in off the street and filling in for his army unit who was a lot smaller than Marciano, so what hope for Marciano in against a proper Welsh boxer who was a lot bigger in size than Dr Jack, clearly Dr Jack was something special known as ''The Ironman'' and described as “a cross between a bulldozer and a brick wall”, look at the mess he made of opposition players, he was a Welsh schools sprint champion so was fast as well as strong and obviously clever hence being a doctor and flying fighter planes and gliders in the war, so Marciano was up against something special but Dr Jack had only had a few bouts initially filling in for a colleague whereas Marciano was a boxer all be it an amateur at the time, if Marciano couldn't beat Dr Jack then he wouldn't have beaten Calzaghe, i wonder if Jack Matthews ever told Ali the story as they were big friends.

On the one hand we have a Welsh rugby star that was not a boxer that matched Marciano in the ring and on the other hand we have a Welsh champion boxer that was bigger than the Welsh rugby player in a match up against Marciano who is often said to be hyped, the Welsh boxer having fought two American legends of the game on their own turf in Roy Jones Jnr and Bernard Hopkins and beating them, as Celtic boxer Steve Collins used to say believe in the man not the hype and the Americans like to hype alright.

Haha Walcott would of destroyed Hopkins, Joe Calz, or any of the current LHWs or CWs. Hell Walcott destroys most of todays if not all HWs. Rocky rearranges Joe's nose and puts him in a coma, makes him see the light. 2 Italians fighting here, so it will be a war while it lasts.

No wind up Ron, Matthews and Marciano fought a 4 round bout with no head guards, unless there was a knockdown or a beatdown in these type of matches they gave the result as a draw as the American and British forces were on the same side, but they say Matthews had the better of him, Matthews had only had a few bouts under his belt , Matthews corner told him after he got in the ring that Marciano had knocked out his last 6 opponents [which is good going in the amateurs] but it didn't faze Matthews and they recon Matthews had the better of him, so what chance would the hype machine have against Super Joe Calzaghe.

A featherfisted old bhop and shot RJJ dropped Joe Cal. Rocky would put Joe in a coma.

Rocky wins 10 out of 10. Joe would not last the distance. He would be ahead every time until Marciano started tagging him. Whether he was ahead 3 rounds, 6 rounds, 2 rounds, etc. Marciano catches him, hard.

No, because each time Joe MAYBE pulls it off, Rocky catches him. Joe would never be able to stay away for 12, let alone 15.

Rocky wins each time. Joe could keep him off with speed and movement for a while, but Rocky would start taking over.

Obviously, most agree. The poll here is overwhelming for Marciano.

Only guys at ESB would pick a SMW to beat Marciano. Yes, Marciano was a small heavy, but he punches harder and can take a harder punch then Joe ever did.
