You completley misread the point I was trying to make.

Fighters need to get matched progressively. Haye lost to Thompson and then had 5-6 fighters before he faced anybody as good as him again.

With Froch, when he first got to title level he was winning on points, then he was stopping guys late, then he was blitzing guys out. The level of opponent was getting steadily better and Froch's performances were improving. Froch style will never allow him to look good against Ward/Dirrell/Taylor. He could fight those guys 100x and never look good.

Price fights 9 bums befored he gets moved up. Then faces Dallas, blitzed him and then faced McDermott who is the same level as Dallas. Then he fights Sexton, stops him, and takes a steps back to fight Audley who he destrosy....and then fight Skelton whos even worse! Then jumps up 5 levels to fight Thompson. and unlike Haye, instead of taking 4-5 fights inbetween that level, he fight a rematch with Thompson. Its poor match making.

 

Boxers generally in this day are matched way to carefully especially considering that when you get even to mediocre level you fight 3-4 times a year.

You have to make it count.

So is Price wrong to rematch Thompson this quickly & how do use see it going??

 

Who are the guys for the 4-5 fights inbetween Rob? Are those guys not likely to KO him like TT did?

Froch should have been fighting for a title earlier than he did. He didn't impress in several fights and he said himself it was because he wasn't tested. Not what I would call a textbook job by Hennesey.

Interesting discussion and some good posts all around.

I take issue of some level called "international," as if that is somehow better than "domestic" or "journeyman."

If the guy has accomplished something, it doesn't matter if he's from Ipswich or Moscow of New York. If he hasn't, no matter how pretty his spoon-fed record might be, the 'international' designation doesn't make him a bit better.

Don't fall for the old Tex Rickard "Orchid Man" ruse. The 'mysterious' foreigner with 'international' credentials might sell tickets but it doesn't make for a step up if he hasn't accomplished anything.

And once in a while it's worth a look behind the curtain. Perhaps Price's people -- management and promoter -- had seen enough spaghetti-legged Harlem Shake imitations in sparring to know he was at risk to lose to anyone, so they tried to take a shortcut and hoped for the best. And now that he has been exposed, they know the only way to rehabilitate his image is to put him back in with Thompson and hope he gets the job done before Thompson skewers him again ... which would at least put him back on track, while fighting a few nobodies would risk another KTFO loss and winning would still leave people skeptical about his chinny-chin-chin.

Happens all the time when people look at the bottom line. Being rushed often means being cashed in, and that's not necessarily a bad thing if the fighter is able to bank some paydays that would never have come if they had been exposed at the domestic or 'international' level.

 

I think the issue with matchmaking Price is he has serious pop so he gets people out there quickly but he learns nothing. On the other hand, if his punch resistance is poor, do you risk him fighting guys who are going to take him deep? Thompson was not an opponent where people were screaming that it was madness for Price to fight him. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

 

Perhaps, but they've only been marginally better. Jackiewicz isn't that much better than Bienias, Hatton isn't much better than Jennings etc.

N'Dou was an excellent choice of opponent but since then Kell has been moved very slowly.

He's ranked #1 by the IBF (their rankings at welter are truly awful as well btw) & still doesn't look ready for a world title despite winning 4 title eliminators.

Alexander is a massive step up for Kell.
