In my eyes his legacy is greater then mayweather's and his achievements far outweigh floyds. However, for some reason he doesnt get the respect he deserves, and im serious about that despite the numerous threads you used to see from *******s on here. Im convinced, no im CERTAIN, the pacquiao who destroyed margarito and cotto would beat mayweather :yep
He gets huge respect from me Look at the men he has fought coming up through the weights and the style he did it in A modern great and still very dangerous
He's lost a few fights recently so the shine has come of him. When he's retired he'll get the respect he deserves.
Manny was a phenom. May never have actually been as good as Mayweather, but his legacy -- what he actually done in the ring and who he did it against -- outweighs his. And looking back on it, yeah, he probably was the only guy who had the tools to take Mayweather's '0'. That 2008-2010 version of him was immense. So yeah, when he eventually hangs them up, he'll get more respect than what he's getting at the moment.
As he's gotten older, I've come to appreciate his talent much more. He does get overrated for the 8 divisions things, but what he brought into the ring was a Roy Jones/Mike Tyson level physical talent with incredible instincts. Top 20 ATG for sure.
Pacquiao was and still is a great fighter but I have never seen him getting a lack of respect. I still think Mayweather has achieved more than him.
This. Best fighter in his era, an ATG, and the guy that really got me into boxing after he beat Barrera. I think he would've beaten Floyd although we'll never really know, but in terms of achievements he's much better than Floyd.
By some, yes, but he'll never get the respect he fully deserves. As a matter of fact, most boxers never do for the things they accomplish. Looking at it from the outside in, an ignorant 'boxing fan' won't understand the worth of an Olympic Medal, a Lonsdale belt, a Commonwealth belt, a European title and a world title. To a boxer and anyone who has won them, those sort of things are priceless. Going back to Manny's achievements, he'll be more looked at by a lot of people for his losses, more recently his bad knockout loss. Why? Because people are driven by favoritism and the dirty mind of wanting to see a person who has success in life, fall. It's human nature in some respect, in my opinion. Anyone who can see where he was to what he achieved in the end is nothing anyone can actually come to acknowledge due to the actual magnitude of his achievements in the ring and his life. Every boxer who has done well and come to an end with their careers will always get reflected on in a nice light and only then will he really get a lot more respect from what he's done, but never to the full length of what he probably does deserve.
He did get the respect he deserved people thought he stood a chance against Mayweather and Marquez they thought he was a beast Now the smoke has cleared we have seen he is just a decent fighter nothing too special
You have to wait until a fighter retires for a few years before you see his true standing with the fans. There is far too many haters and *******s at the moment to get fair reflection. I think he is a fighter of Henry Armstrong calibre and deserves his spot next to all the other greats.
Going to get pelters for this but I think his campaign through the weights was superbly managed by Top Rank. Catchweights, painfully slow fighters, fighters who were tailor-made for him. I think the whole "up against a much bigger man" angle took many detractors away from the actual quality and style of the opposition he faced.
He's a tremendous fighter for a start so there's no argument there. However, when thinking about his move up the heavier weights these factors came to mind. There was something rather artificial about it so it was ironic that it was Marquez who ended up knocking him out as it it didn't exactly look like it was his natural weight they were fighting at either when that happened. So, for instance, when considering Pac and Marquez in terms of pure quality I prefer to consider them at their lower natural weight rather than an artificially bloated one. I don't immediately put a lot of store by this multi division champ business for smaller guys.
Smoke? Just a decent fighter? :verysad. This is precisely what the OP is talking about. If there were smokes and screens put up for Manny's career, then you can say the exact same thing for any other fighter over the past 20 years - Hopkins, Jones and Mayweather. You don't go beating the fighters he has -- JMM, Barrera, Morales, Cotto, Marg, etc -- and having the greatest resume in the sport currently, by being "just a decent fighter". He is a lock on top 50 ATG, but yeah, nothing too special, right :good.
