I enjoyed the Froch fight in terms of the action, toughness and guts on display once Kessler managed to get a foothold after that bad start, and I ended up scoring it a draw. I think it's fair to say though that Kessler ought to retire; he's way past it and fast approaching the point of looking shot to me.

What to make, then, of both his ability and his overall career? I've always liked him and thought he was a fine fighter at his best in spite of certain shortcomings on top of injury etc.

Should Bute retire as well, because he got hammered far worse than Kessler did and you dont even think Froch beat Kessler?

He is far beyond his best in terms of natural abilities, but ironically is peaking now in terms of craftiness, cleverness, and versatility due to his time spent with Montoya. It's tragic he didn't hook up with him much earlier in his career. The pairing has offset his plummet towards "shot" as his physical gifts (speed, reflexes, balance) decline and brought out some new aspects to his game that weren't there before - and would've greatly improved his overall h2h standing years back, during his athletic prime in the middle part of the last decade.

So he can probably hang around 168 and beat some names, maybe even all except Ward. I wouldn't make him too heavy an underdog in a rubber match with Froch (but definitely an underdog, no longer 50-50 even though I scored the rematch a draw), and would like his chances taking Stieglitz's belt. So it isn't really that he doesn't have any options left with his remaining abilities.

I had the fight close than Ledderman and the gang but Carl won it, a rematch could be closer, good fight

Yeah, I think he could take the albeit slightly underrated Stieglitz's belt and add a nice major title to his list. Of course, there's always a chance that this fight took enough out of Kessler (as in all the world class left in him) that he would lose to Stieglitz, but I certainly wouldn't hold that against his legacy as being on the short list of a young division's best names. Then again, he isn't without argument on that short list either. A very good fighter though. And, to me, one of the most likable guys too.

This. He made Froch look lost at times in there. His skills and ringcraft have never really been better, in my opinion. When he had just a little bit more zest in his tank, he beat Froch, and he came close this time, only to fall just short( I had it 7-5 for the Cobra).

I think he deserves a rubber match or another big fight. He still has the look of a fighter who can spring one more meaningful upset against a top 5 competitor before he just can't do it at the top anymore. Needs to get his right shoulder sorted away, though. Keeps bugging him at the worst times.

I was impressed with what he accomplished in the fight given that I thought his legs looked gone early on (although I had it close but clear for Froch). I wouldn't want to see him in with Ward again but think he could more than hold his own against the rest of the field. He needs to up his workrate if he fights Froch again, as it's unlikely he can stop Froch. He could probably get a decent payday against Abraham. Seems fairly low risk at this point.

I had it the same way 7-5 Froch I think a rematch would be watchable but can not see them beating Ward who is a very smart guy inside and outside the ring....Ward will be hard to beat at 68 and he already beat Dawson so he may clean out 75 pretty smoothly

I got to agree with that - try to Imagine the calzaghe fight if he could move his head (he NEVER moved his head prior to 2008!) and go to the body like that. Still, I think some of the problem was that Kessler didn't really listen to his trainer all that much and would have probably kept doing the same thing until he was unable to do so.

you can't dislike a guy like Kessler: warrior in the ring, and a class human outside
