Not to quit, but to collect themselves and give themselves a chance to get back into the fight. I understand there is pride and what-not. But it is so much smarter if you are stunned and cant see punches coming to take a knee and get yourself together and live to fight another round and possibly win the fight, instead of having the ref stop the fight right there or get KO'd. Obviously in a close fight you dont want to lose the points, but if the fighter feels like he needs a knockout to win anyways, it seems like a good idea to take a knee and gather your senses to try and win. Any thoughts?
because that's a guaranteed point subtracted from your score and some fighters are too proud to admit they're in trouble
Sometimes, the fighter is not really hurt, but it just looks that way because he's covering up and not throwing back. If the fighter really is hurt/stunned, then his faculties are not fully intact and he doesn't have the wherewithal to think to take a knee anyway.
Thats what I thought also, when they are really hurt they cant think well enough to tell themselves to take a knee. But I think if it was something mentioned in training camp etc they would be able to.
