    Technically speaking:

    Mayweather, Mijares, Kessler, Wlad.

Calzaghe also has a very effective jab, because of his handspeed.

Yeah I get you.....I'm not remotely saying Calzaghe should be in this list, but I don't see Kessler's jab being one of the top 5 in boxing today....Kessler's best weapon is his punch accuracy when using the one-two

Exactly. His accuracy and efficiency with that jab is part of what makes him such a good fighter. And Calzaghe neutralized Kessler's jab due to the angles he was showing Kessler, and utilizing his superior handspeed, as well as it being a little awkward trying to land an orthodox jab on a southpaw, especially one who fights like Joe. But that doesn't change the fact that Kessler's jab is on an elite level. Most people can't land **** on Calzaghe - period.

    Fair enough!

I'm still struggling to understand how those uppercuts never dropped Calzaghe.....Kessler is a mean puncher!

Mayweather has a classy jab.....Is an elite jab based on its power and ability to damage the opponent or the use of the jab to set up combinations more effectively?

That's the thing - there is no set definition. You can use the jab in so many ways, and it still be effective. You can use it to set up your other stuff. As a range-finder, a means to get on the inside, if you're a shorter fighter. You can use it to score, build up the points, keep an opponent at bay, or to actually hurt them.

The jab can be used defensively and offensively, in pretty much every way imaginable. That's what makes it such an important weapon. And I think you'll notice that the names mentioned in this thread are the best fighters in the world - and that's no coincidence.

I love the jab of Mijares. The speed with which it's delivered is awesome, even at such a low weight.

I would say, Winky and Miguel Cotto.

Cotto is learning how to basically keep the jab pumping more often.
Considering he is a sledgehammer of a puncher, it has obvious pop to it.
If he can learn to keep up the consistency of his jab, it can be a force to be reckoned with.

Although nobody has mentioned it yet, (I know he lacks power) but Paulie Malignaggi has a terrific jab. If you watch his fights/know about boxing it actually is interesting to see how well he performs and uses this punch.

When he uses it - Oscar De La Hoya possesses the best jab in boxing.

Cotto has a great power jab. ODH has a great power jab. Floyd has a fast snapping accurate jab. His jab to the body is the best I have ever seen of all time. Winky has the best all round jab being that he wins 99% of his fights with that alone and he does not have much else. Wlad has a punishing jab. I would say all around winky. I cant see anybody else better all around.

That's because Calzaghe is a southpaw - better to use the hook and straight right.

If you want to see a mean Kessler jab see Kessler-Lucas and Kessler-Beyer. They both get nearly paralysed by the jab alone.
