It just seems like tall guys prefer to clinch than change levels and go to the body. I can only assume they think they open themselves up to hooks if they come down but surely you're vulnerable to an uppercut when you reach out to clinch? It's interesting someone brought up Tommy Hearns since Manny Steward seems to teach his tall fighters to clinch rather than mix up the attack. Wlad can hook to the head off his jab, has anyone seen him hook to the body off of it? Thanks for the replys!
Good List. Williams would get inside and throw volume punches, changing levels. His body work probably wasn't the best, but he didn't ignore it. LSC is a murderous body puncher. He has one of the best left hooks to the body in boxing today. He does it by dipping to his left and firing around his opponents glove. Its the perfect example.
Yeah, different kind of "effective" body puncher. He wasn't going to liquidate anyone's internal organs with a single blow or anything...but he did effectively use his long-armed hull-thumps to a) score points, b) tire guys out, and c) get those arms to drop... OTOH you have guys like Trinidad who by contrast were economical with their depth charges, but once he made contact, :scaredas: - like a predator smelling blood, if he found that soft tissue once he would hammer it repeatedly and with bad intentions. See, and then you have Santa Cruz who is just a ****ing freak and the best of both worlds. I hear a lot of people say he is more of a volume hitter and doesn't possess 1-punch KO power. That's nonsense. The dude is extremely heavy-handed, IMO, he just happens to have fought a lot of tough hombres. He does have pretty impressive power in p4p terms, and he might actually have a higher work rate than PTP. ...and he loves going downstairs, sometimes doing so exclusively for entire rounds.
A busty thick-hipped redhead who finds situationally appropriate ways to offhandedly quote everyone from Epicurus to Voltaire in casual banter? :think
It just occurred to me that even if such a dream girl were to be spotted watching that (seated ringside, I guess) she would've aged 25 years since. :!: Eh, no deal breaker. :deal I like 'em mature.
Lewis came to mind, were you watching Wlad fight? Vitali mixes it up with that weird style of his, unlike Wlad who likes to setup with the jab for the straight.
They go to the body when the shorter fighter finds his way close, then they can use the body punches to soften the shorter fighter and then land uppercuts or get some distance and land the long right hands. A tall fighter who does not use his long range (assuming his reach matches his height) is not properly using his advantage.
