If Tony Bellew eate normal he would be just as big.

But the fact of the matter is..? He is living on a weight watchers diet.

I think he's fit & healthy at 175 & doesn't need to move up. I think when he first got to title level he wasn't doing the weight properly but he's more dedicated now.

A big sign of been weight drained is a lack of stamina & Cleverly (who outworks everyone) aside no ones been able to out work him.

If cruiser weight was only 10 or 15 pounds higher then it may be worth the risk but 25 pounds is a huge jump, if I was in Tony's position I'd stay where I was.

What's funny? He's admitted that he used to balloon in weight following a fight & that he struggled getting back down due to him putting so much on, now he barely gets over 13 stone outside of camp.

    This. Good post.

Some fighters have a frame that when in peak condition carries a weight that doesn't naturally have a 'weight category' that fits. Tony Bellew does look gaunt at LHW. It's the first thing you notice when you see him at pre-fight etc and it is striking. As mentioned though, there is nowhere for him to go without radical changes to the higher weight at which he may be underpowered and not naturally big enough to compete with others who boil 'down' to Cruiser. I'm in the precise same boat myself when it comes to weight. It's like taking a 33 inch trouser or having a 41 inch chest. Off the peg stuff just doesn't fit.

If Bellew had been putting in sensational performances then people probably wouldn't think he would benefit from moving up. If he was gassing in fights and looking fragile then there could be some weight draining going on, but the truth is I think he's just found his level.

He beat Chilemba on fitness and work rate rather than talent, which would suggest he's fine at the weight, just lacking in other areas of his game.

Bellew would be chubby. I looked at some of his amateur fights. And he looked like he had a "high" (for a fighter) body fat %.
And it is right to fight at LHW. I said this after the draw against Chilemba. He would lose his biggest strength at Cruiserweight. At LHW he now has a big title fight coming up. Good for him. Why do people still say he should move up?
His team and he knows the best what is good for Bellew.

Cant argue with that, but while I would not say he is weight drained to to the extreme, there is no doubt he would benefit from a say 185lbs weight division.

Reckon the likes of Paquio Mayweather etc have dispelled the myth of draining yourself for an advantage, hence them winning titles in lots of weights by just giving the body what it needs.

There really does need to be a Light CW division at around 187lbs. You could easily fit two new divisions inbetween LHW & CW. 25lbs is too big a gap.

It doesn't matter what he looks like, the guy still has respectable power, good stamina and a good size advantage. A muscular physique doesn't mean anything, look at Felix Trinidad he was "skinny" at welter and still "skinny" at middleweight yet he was still a banger.

This. The jump to Cruiser is nothing like anyother weight jump, I think he'd lose too much although still good enough to rule Britain but no further.

  13. More like gaunt, he definitely needs to move up although the size difference and level of opposition at cruiser would be troublesome.

Good post. It's a huge gap and possibly preventing some good, competitive match ups from being made.

There are way to many weight divisions for sure, this is what makes the 25lb gap so ridiculous.
