There won't be any intimidation here. Its silly that some people think that Tyson would be intimidated by Liston but its totally inconceivable that it can be the other way around. Few things, to those saying after round "x" Liston takes over.....Remember that Sonny was never known for his stamina, he's only seen the 12th round once in his career. Now to suggest that somehow he will take over the fight in the later rounds is makes no sense when Tyson is the one who employs a more physically taxing style and has seen the 12th round more frequently than Sonny. Tyson had better Speed, Power, Stamina and Chin. Liston's best chances would be early in the fight. He'd have to also keep Mike from landing early on or his hands would be full. Tyson loved to fight back then, and as long as he's getting his licks he would remain in the fight. Liston's power is comparable to Bruno or Ruddock, so the power won't be an issue but Liston's ability to keep Mike from landing will determine the fight. Overall Tyson has more than enough tools to beat him.
Tyson by 3rd round kayo.Liston had power and skill and smarts, but Tyson had speed, power, and Cus.And those factors would see him through.
If Liston uses his jab then he can keep Tyson off of him. If Tyson can't cut that distance (since Sonny has unnaturally long arms for a shorter HW) then he can't take advantage of his handspeed. If Liston can keep Tyson off then I'd say he wins probably by late KO (rounds 8, 9 or 10 maybe) as Tyson gets frustrated. It would be a great fight though.
Tyson is much quicker, more durable, and hits as hard if not harder IMO. Liston has the longer reach and better jab... but boxing from the outside or out jabbing somebody was never one of Tyson's keys to victory. Tyson will fight Liston the same way he fought everybody during his prime. I don't think Liston could deal with it. I do think the fight would be closely contested, might even go the distance... but I see Tyson winning either way.
Tyson was much faster with his hands and his feet. He was more explosive with his punches as well. Liston had power and he was strong... but I think Tyson was just as strong and hit just as hard if not harder. When you combine that with the quickness and explosiveness Tyson had... very impressive. Tyson had good head movement and was hard to hit by slower fighters. Douglas, Holyfield, and Lewis all had quick hands. Maybe they weren't quicker than Tyson, but they were quicker than Liston, and they were quicker than most (if not all) of the other guys Tyson fought. Chin? They both had good chins. Tyson was down vs. Douglas, Holyfield, and Lewis. They were all good punchers with good speed. They all broke Tyson down before dropping him, and stopping him. Tyson was clearly past prime vs. Lewis. He was slightly faded vs. Holyfield, but so was Holyfield. Tyson was used to fighting guys bigger than himself. Liston was usually the bigger man, usually the much bigger man. He was a little taller than Tyson and had a much longer reach... but outjabbing somebody was never Tyson's plan. Tyson always had the shorter reach and that was fine with him. Tyson's plan is to bob and weave with quickness and make his opponent miss with his peek a boo defense while landing his big shots on the inside. I see Tyson's speed being a big problem. Liston had those 2 first round KO wins over the much smaller Patterson. He stopped Cleveland Williams in the 3rd and the 2nd round. Williams was considered big but really wasn't compared to the guys Tyson fought. Williams was C level at best. He stopped Folley in the 3rd who was a small HW. Machen was able to last the distance vs. Liston and give him some problems. Marty Marshall beat Liston 1 out of 3 and broke his jaw. Marshall weighed about 180 Lbs. and was far from great. The Marshall loss was very early in Liston's career as were the 2 close wins over Johnny Summerlin. I'll take Tyson by decision or late round TKO.
years ago i picked liston, now i am realistic and i see the reality, tyson was heavier prime for prime, he was a faster starter, he was a better puncher and i would say that a harder puncher too, tyson landed much better combinations, he was more aggressive, faster, he had a better chin, he was more skilled, he had the better defence clearly here. tyson was proved and he knocked the **** out big strong guys, liston proved his power with smaller men. tyson had better credentials here. tyson by ko in 6 rounds. the people think that liston would beat frazier because foreman did it, and some people think that liston would have been the same nightmare for tyson that george foreman would have been . bull****
