it's not arum's fault if leonard wanted a catch weight. Leonard didn't want to fight Lalonde at 175. He was too small. what is arum supposed to do? he's trying to make the fight happen, and they agreed to meet at 168. You could just as easily blame Leonard Ellerbe for demanding a catch weight of 152 lbs with Mayweather, but the situation is totally different. I agree catchweights are BS, especially when titles are on the line. I have no problem with a non-title fight catch weight, but to be honest, the catch weight in SRL Lalonde was more logical. because there was a much bigger weight difference between Lalonde and SRL. SRL was a middleweight at the time, he said he weighed around 160. Lalonde was a Light Heavyweight, competing for the 175 limit. that's about a 10 to 15 pound difference, at least, and it's possible Lalonde walked around at more then 175. SRL wasn't a LHW champion. Not even a super middleweight, just a regular middleweight. Mayweather is currently a Light Middleweight 154 champion, and a 147 lb champion. He just competed at 147 and weighed 146 pounds. Canelo is also a 154 lb champion. Mayweather fought Cotto at 154 and weighed 150 and didn't demand a catch weight. Why now? because he's worried about Canelo's punching power? that's the only reason I can come up with. his LM title is supposed to be defended at 154, not 152. I agree that I don't think catchweights were too common before SRL Lalonde, but it's not like catchweights are all that common. they happen sometimes, but not that often. in the past Mayweather hasn't demanded a catchweight at a non standard weight limit. you could blame the promoter, but i think it comes down to the fighters. SRL wanted a catch weight. Mayweather now wants a catch weight but it's not the same thing since Mayweather is already a 154 pound champion.
agree with leonard. canelitos best chance is to come in at 154 which Im pretty sure is the plan. Floyd probably knows this as well. mayweather and his camp are very smart and the catchweight is just another way for Floyd to make more money off the fight once the fine is imposed. 20 percent is probably what will be the penalty which is what is normal in the UFC.
SRL says he'd do it to. ESB posters say 'nah, he's old and senile'. :rofl **** out of here... Nah, actually I'll be out of here. Can only stand 'intelligent' posters for so long.
Well Shobox Mayweather says that a catch weight fight like this means nothign when you drain an opponent so they are not at their best. Now he goes ahead and does it
who is saying he wouldnt do it? he would be as big of a hypocrite as floyd if he said he wouldnt do it when he in fact did do it.
Did FMJ say that? was this before the Guerrero fight? If FMJ said that, then that should tell you all you need to know. Now he's demanding a catch weight of 152 lbs. Honestly, I think it shows just how scared he is of Canelo. He wants to drain Canelo for 2 pounds, thinking Canelo will be weak. Money May is too scared to fight Canelo at 154!!
bull****! if you want the 175 title...you move up to 175 to fight/beat the champion. you don't make him come down to some bull**** ass catchweight. duran went up to 147 to fight leonard and beat him. that's what real men do.
dont forget that canelo with this extra 2 lbs will have to lose 25lbs of weight unaturally and this will weaken anybody to the extreme
..it goes way farther than that. ****://roberto00.wordpress.com/2011/02/12/catch-22-a-history-of-boxing-catchweight-fights/
Apparantly you didn't read what I wrote. I said "I agree catchweights are BS, especially when titles are on the line. I have no problem with a non-title fight catch weight..." I agree wtih you here, all I'm saying is that as far as catchweights go, the Leonard Lalonde catch weight was more logical then Canelo - Mayweather since Lalonde was an actual Light Heavyweight 175 pounder and SRL was a middleweight (not super middleweight) around 160. That's totally different then this silly 152 pound catch weight. it shows Mayweather's scared that he has to demand such an obscure catch weight within a weight division. I agree real men fight at the actual weight, unlike Mayweather who doesn't want to fight Canelo at 154 pounds like a real man!
Leonard had LaLonde at 168 lb. The Hearns rematch was a catchweight of 164, with a $1,000,000 deduction for ever pound Hearns was over. The third Duran fight was a 160 lb catchweight, even though it was for the 168 lb title. Big Leonard fan, so it doesn't bug me. The opponents agreed to it. But obviously he's going to support it because he did it.
