One question for the *****s.... Now that catch weight is magically acceptable because Floyd is asking for it, will you now eat crow for giving Manny and his fans such a shitty time for doing it too?
Catchweights have been apart of this sport much, much longer than anybody on this board has been alive. It's only recently that they've become such a stigma among the goofs that have gotten caught up in the *****-******* wars. Mayweather fans still don't seem to understand that the main reason Mayweather is catching so much flak is because of his blatant hypocrisy, not because of the catchweight itself.
The only reason ya'll are defending SRL is because he is being nice to your hero. Anyone in their right mind would know that SRL would have dominated Canelo an it would not have been at 152lbs. You can find all kinds of statements where fighters are being to kind and showing to much respect to this generation. Where ya'll bring up Leonard saying that Mayweather would have been competitive with the Fab 4 generation, you have Duran saying Mayweather would have been nobody. Which one do you believe? It's not hard to admit or see that boxers talk out of their ass a lot of times. So you want me to believe that Leonard would have fought at a catch weight because he is being kind towards Mayweather and the sport? Ok, then am I also to believe that this catch weight fight is meaningless because Mayweather said CWs didn't mean anything?
Someone brought that up before... They act like him fighting for the title at a catch weight was any more legit than anyone else fighting for the title at catch weights SRL's legacy is not defined by that 5th belt in the 5th division, so it doesn't really hurt him This would have been one of Floyd's best fights, and he almost ruins it with the catch weight
This is the best statement about this subject that I have read yet. You are 100% right. That is what I was getting at when I said about how SRL - Lalonde was much different then Mayweather - Canelo. SRL and Lalonde were two full weight divisions apart. Mayweather and Canelo are only 1 weight division apart now and Mayweather himself holds a 154 lb belt! This is why, as far as catchweights go, Mayweather's 152 lb demand is much more abnormal then what SRL and Lalonde agreed to. That's the point, I do not believe that SRL would not have ever demanded a non-standard catch weight within a weight division like Mayweather did. SRL moved up to middleweight from welter and had no problem making the normal limits. It was only when he decided to fight a Light Heavyweight that he requested the 168 catch weight, which is now an actual weight division called Super Middleweight.
Consdering SRL fought Hagler at 160, having fought once in 5 years, all at 147 apart from 1 154 fight 6 years previously I would say Leonard is being very humble... He didn't fight Kalule at a catchweight when he won the 154 title and didn't fight Hagler at a catchweight at 160. He asked hearns for catchweight when he fought at 168 (164 I think) so yes, I do think Leonard is being a bit generous to Mayweather in this instance. Lalonde was a light-heavy and understandable there was a weight stipulation - it's not like Leonard had fought at 175 twice before and won titles there is it?
leonard is being generous because anyone in their right mind knows that the fighters in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's would've dominated in todays era. the self-proclaimed greatest fighter ever asking for a catchweight against canelito. everyone is going to realize how sad this was for Floyd to demand the cut on 9/14 after Floyd easily wins a non-controversial UD. even more so when canelito fights therafater and is made to look absolutely average against any of the top jmw's not named ishe smith or corneluis bundrage.
SMFH...he isn't "being nice" or "being humble", the motha****er did the same ****, again proving how many jack offs don't know **** about boxing.
YDKSAB if you think that it's the same thing. Lalonde was a Light Heavyweight (175) and SRL was a Middleweight (160) so they met in the middle at 168. Money May has a 154 lb belt and weighed 146 for his last fight! Mayweather didn't demand a catch weight when he fought Cotto at 154, because he said he wanted his oppoents to be strong, to be at their best. Then he turns around and pulls this. SRL and Lalonde's catch weight made sense. This does not, and it shows that Floyd is trying to tilt the bout in his favor by making Canelo drain himself so he gets paid what he deserves. He should be able to fight at 154 and still get paid this is friggin ridiculous! 154 lbs is the weight limit of the Light Middleweight division!
Floyd didn't "say" anything, SRL said...how are ya'll going to tell this man what he would or wouldnt have done? He says that's what he would have done, period. Did SRL not fight Hearns at a catchweight? I'll look that up as don't remember off the top of my head.
Leonard insisted on a catchweight of 164 lbs. Hearns would have had to pay Leonard $500,000 if he came in over 164 lbs. First note from Ray Leonard's Boxrec page, when you click on the little book reflecting the details of SRL vs Hearns II. So would you like to apologize and say you were wrong?
He fought Lalonde at 168, in his next fight he insisted on a 164 catchweight with Tommy Hearns...so it's not "like the same thing", it's literally the same ****ing thing.
