Lopez needed to keep the fight in the center of the ring. When he got caught on the rope he was a sitting duck for Maidana's power punches.

    h2h, Maidana beat Ortiz.

Maidana beat Lopez who beat Ortiz.

It seems pretty obvious that Maidana > Ortiz...yet fans on these forums insist that Maidana is nothing but a "sloppy club fighter" while Ortiz "would do well in a Mayweather rematch", and "was really getting to him". :nut

Great card by Showtime. The opener was a stinker, but the last two fights were tremendous.

I actually rate this fight more than Rios-Alvarado II, though not quite as high as Bradley-Provodnikov as far as FOTY candidates go. Either way... Twas great fun while it lasted, no?

The HBO card stinked. Showtime blew them away tonight.

    wow.

it took a whole one round more for career 140-pound maidana to ko lopez than the great, wrecking machine, better-than-prime-dlh and future Hall-of-Famer canelito.

    fuking nuthuggers.

dumber than a box of rocks.

Maidana is interviewed by Jim Gray.

He says Lopez mostly landed shots he was fine with standing up to, but a couple in the side of the head really did hurt.

He says the worrisome punch on the side of the head was the only deviation from the way he thought his game plan would play out, but the voice of his trainer in the corner kept him calm through it.

He says the ref did a great job, but in the moment he didn't want to stop throwing punches and wanted to keep brawling with Lopez.

Maidana is asked about Matthysse. (his childhood friend, teammate, rival and training partner - against whom he went 3-0-1 in a series of very close matches) He chuckles. He says they've been talking about meeting in the pros for a long time but currently there is no offer made and he isn't sure if and when it will happen.

Lopez was compus menti enough to fight on, but if you're going to take clean powershots to the chin, you need to throw some punches back.

Lopez congratulates Maidana, tells him it was a good battle.

Lopez tells Jim Gray he thought it was a premature stoppage. He admits he was stung. He says he should have been given the benefit of the doubt to get past that situation. He says he got buzzed and could have still fought his way out even though it may have appeared he was hesitant. He was actively covering up and felt he was still in the game.

Gray asks where he would like to go having moved up against Canelo and dropped back down after losing. Lopez feels perfect at 147. He knew what he was up against with Maidana and trained really hard and unfortunately it didn't go his way, but he is comfortable remaining at welter.
