Damn, that's a lot. I bet Rigo would fight Mares for 1.5 mil. Or how about 2 mil split between Rigo v Santa Cruz. There are so many interesting fights that can be made for 15% of what Floyd makes.

Funny how people said the exact opposite after HBO had back-to-back hits with Bradely-russian guy and Rios-Alvarado 2.

If HBO comes up with another hit in the next two weeks, people will say the reverse once again.

Mares just made 375k vs PDL. The combined purse for Mares Agbeko 2 was under 500k. Which is how much Shiming will be making for his 2nd 4 rounder.

mayweather-guerrero ppv buys is decent (about 850k) but showtime lost millions on that fight card by making a mistake of overpaying floyd with a huge guarantee money (about $30m).

again if mayweather-canelo doesn't deliver the required numbers then showtime is in danger of losing millions again.

if these billion dollar networks keep losing millions on their boxing shows then time will come they will slash their budget for boxing or totally stop doing this losing boxing shows. these networks are doing it for business.

Even with Canelo's high purse, they should easily turn in a profit, and possibly nullify the losses from Guerrero. The problem is, it's fight 2 of the 6 fight contract. What then, unless it's Canelo rematches?

Very disappointed in my boy Gamboa. Should've been fireworks. KO1 Dawson was pretty boss though.

Showtime has Floyd so they are now the flagship brand by default.

Right if they keep losing money yes, I doubt they are losing money on their other fights. They took a gamble with mayweather, this will force mayweather to fight live body's or the people's fights. If not I'm sure showtime has some kind of backdoor exit in the contract saying the numbers have to be so much or the contract is in void. But for non ppv fights the numbers are there, with Broner and canelo drawing over 1 million views.

Edit: I'm not sure if Broner has fought on showtime yet but I believe he was drawing over 1 million views. Hbo the same, they have been getting million views for their fights too. Boxing is a small portion of what hbo and showtime do, they spend more on their original programming then boxing. Their ultimate goal is to get subscribers, the better the content the more people want to watch.

Not necessarily -- boxing for these networks is what is called in the industry a "loss leader." It's something that doesn't make a profit on its own but builds the brand identity and draws viewers to the network who become subscribers and help profit in other areas.

Showtime is a very distant No. 2 to HBO and is well aware of that fact, and that was part of the strategy in signing the Mayweather deal. If that fight lost $12 milliion but the next three fights make $4 million apiece, they're even on that end but untold millions ahead in being recognized by more people and thought of highly by more people ... many of whom eventually will subscribe -- or so the network is counting on, and why it invests in itself this way.

It's the same strategy NBC used with "Friends," when the cast was making far more than the show could generate in ad revenue on its on ... but it boosted the network's overall ratings, people tuned in to watch other shows that were advertised on "Friends" or stayed to watch the shows that followed on the same night ... and it was a net profit.

Sirius satellite radio, which has a big upside but right now has a very low market share, did the same with signing Howard Stern to a deal that pays him far more than can be justified by ratings ... but there are a lot of Stern fans out there and they get the service and maybe some friends get in the car with them and check out Sirius and see what all is offered and decide to subscribe even though they aren't Stern fans, or just having Stern's name associated with the product raises its awareness because he gets talked and written about every time he does something controversial.

I am a prime exampe of how this is working for Showtime. Back in December I decided I didn't want to pay for both HBO and Showtime. I rarely watch movies on either, but the boxing programming is key for me.

I went with Showtime because they show more fights, show replays much more frequently (with HBO it's the first showing, a Sunday replay and in most cases it goes into a vault where the fight becomes as rare as a Harry Greb career collection, never to appear on TV again) and, on the whole, IMO, in the last six months has had better fights and fights that I want to see more.

The biggest plus to Showtime to me is the undercards on Showtime Extreme for cards like the one Saturday night -- I got 5 straight hours of interesting, quality matches. HBO just doesn't give me that value for my money.

    Fair point.

I just hope that each and every network that broadcasts boxing to a televised audience continues to try their best to give us good shows, and a lot of boxing. And hopefully, this in no way will preclude the best possible match-ups from happening.

It's a business though, so sometimes ideal scenarios aren't feasible, and when it comes to business decisions, there are no guarantees.

Regarding the thread theme, it might be true that Showtime has consistently been giving us better fights this year, and arguably beyond. But what type of sampling size do we need (and over what duration) to accurately identify true trends?
