lol yup.... his mouth is pretty indefensible.... to be a *****, you've gotta have blind devotion (well, deaf devotion really). Of course, some inventive *****s like to re-twist and re-create what was said. You gotta pity those special types....
You hit the nail on the head here. Great post. The 154 belts are on the line. Both men hold titles at 154. Therefore, it is not a situation where a catch weight is appropriate. it's not like SRL - Lalonde where Lalonde was a 175 pounder and SRL was a 160 pounder. That time, a 168 catch weight made sense. Here it is totally different. I'm all for a catch weight to justify a size disparity too. SRL - Lalonde made complete sense. There was a size disparity there. There isn't much of a size disparity between FMJ and Canelo, and some would probably argue that FMJ has better speed since he can fight in the 154 lb division at 150 lbs against 154 lb fighters. Those 4 lbs make a difference, but like you said an older and slower Cotto after a couple losses still couldn't really hurt Floyd that much. And Floyd certainly could put on a few more pounds if he wanted to and weigh in at 153. (it's not like he can't do that) But he prefers to come in at 150. What he said about Cotto being at his best and how Cotto is "top competition" was all smoke and mirrors simply to talk up Cotto as being better then he was at that time. If there was any doubt, now we know this for sure due to his demanding the catch weight for Canelo in the same situation as it was vs Cotto, only Canelo is better, younger, and more of a threat to Mayweather losing then Cotto was when FMJ fought Cotto. Like you said, the fight needs to accurately represent the weight class, especially if the belts are on the line. And especialy in a fight of this magnitude pitting two undefeated fighters.
That doesn't justify anything. It's not like 154 is "Canelo's weight" and 147 is "Floyd's weight". Those are the weight limits for the weight classes that exist in boxing. Those are a given. It is the fighter's responsibility to make weight, so that titles are on the line. Canelo probably walks around at much more then 154 and has to train to get down to 154. FMJ on the other hand is comfortable between 146-150. That's why I posed the question "is Canelo too big for Floyd?". I think the answer is yes. But Cotto was also "too big" for Floyd but he had no problem fighting at the regular weight limit for that one. The bottom line is FMJ isn't a real 154 lb champion if he has to demand a catch weight at 152. This is only allowed to happen because DLH is FMJ's puppet and DLH will do wahtever FMJ wants to make the fight. Even bending the rules like allowing 154 lb titles to be on the line at a 152 lb catch weight. FMJ the catchweight king. But definetly not a real 154 lb champ like Canelo. Even if he beats Canelo at this catch weight, Canelo will still be undefeated at Light Middlweight.
It is because Floyd is used to avoid big challenges. Fans were tired of it and finally Floyd will fight at least a B+ fighter.
I'm not mad that it's a title fight necesarily. It should be a title fight. But if it's a title fight, then it's supposed to be contested at the wight limit, you know what I mean? I just wish people were more honest about what really happened here. I'm not hating on Floyd. I'm glad he decided to fight Canelo. Just tell the fans the truth Floyd. The fans will love you for it guaranteed, and will respect you more.
is this not a great fight? one that people thought he wouldnt even give them? what truth are you looking for?
rofl DUDE. promoters are there to gain as much profit out of their fighters (also for there fighters and as we see arum puts himself first when it comes to those 2 priorities). ofcourse its not in both pacquiao and arums interests to fight floyd when pacquiao is destroying his opponents left right and center also lets factor in that bob arum HATES floyd for leaving toprank and costing him the biggest profit he would have ever made. as for which arum fighter ducked floyd? well arum would not let cotto fight him, and though its not definitive its pretty obvious arum put up every roadblock possible to stop floyd from getting the fight on may 5th even after floyd pushed his sentence back and called him out from nov-dec 11 till late feb 2012 floyd in the first round of negotiations agreed to everything (ring size , gloves, PURSE SPLIT) all he asked for was OSDT. it certainly was not much and if bob arum was such a smart promoter he would have made a fuss about it being such an obscure demand and used it as leverage to gain more control over the fight (maybe gaining him and his fighter some more cash). but instead team pacquiao pulled out onto canelo : EVERYONE on this forum was calling floyd to fight canelo ever since pacquiao lost twice in a row (once unofficially to marquez and once "OFFICIALLY" to bradley). after the trout win the canelo floyd hype train went into overdrive IT IS THE NEW SUPERFIGHT the catchweight is not the best move but i would have been fine with it if floyd had not gone on record multiple times slamming catchweight fights on the other end of the spectrum you have floyd who cant even make 154 on fight night facing canelo who came in at 172. we have weight classes for a reason, this is a sport and they attempt to make it as fair as fair as possible. like i said anyone who thinks the catchweight is unreasonable is clueless and has very little argument (but floyd opened his big fat mouth of the subject so it kind of voids his argument)
and floyd cant even make 154... though its pretty clear drainin weight as opposed to putting it on effects you more the point still stands.. floyd could fight anyone at 147 and demolish them, he is allready p4p number 1 and the biggest ppv star of his generation yet he chooses to fight out of his weight class against the one person who everyone is calling him to fight and is the most dangerous opponent he can face gotta give credit where its due mate
The gist of your post was very good and I agree with most of it. But these two quotes are contradictory. You say "anyone who thinks the catchweight is unreasonable is clueless", but then you also said you would have been fine with it if Floyd had "not gone on record multiple times slamming catchweight fights". So, you're not fine with it either? I think that's the thing, I'm okay with it, but I'm not fine with it. I'm not mad at Floyd, but I was hoping Floyd would just man up and fight Canelo straight up, so whoever wins, there's no excuses. The catchweight itself is unreasonable, though. I'm not clueless, I agree with what you're saying. In general it wouldn't have been such a big deal had floyd not "opened his big fat mouth of the subject" it does void that argument. and then from there, you start thinking about it, and you realize that it is a highly uncommon situation. I'd like to know, when was the last time that both fighters held a title in a weight division, and fought at a catchweight below that weight limit? I'd like to know examples of this in the past. I don't think anything like this has ever happened, certainly it's highly uncommon. uncommon and unreasonable might not be brothers, but they are definetly cousins when it comes to boxing. whether something is unreasonable is really a matter of opinion. but uncommon is more objective. you can look at past fights and see how often something like this happens. I really like Canelo's attitude. He seems confident that he can make the weight with his nutritionist and not become weaker. I am excited for this fight, i just think it's absurd that he is forced to get down to 152 because FMJ says so to defend his 154 lb title. absurd if you ask me.
Floyd can't make 154? Yes he can. He made 154 no problem against Cotto. He came in at 150. He made it with 4 pounds to spare. He can make 154 in his sleep. He doesn't even have to train hard and he'll make 154. He can make 154 no problem because he's basically straddling both these weight divisions. you said "its pretty clear drainin weight as opposed to putting it on effects you more". That's the point. Floyd doesn't have to train hard to make 154. he doesn't have to have a strict diet like Canelo has to do to make 154. you're getting it now. He can gain 5 - 7 pounds at his leisure and cruise into the bout. Whereas Canelo has to work hard to make 154, let alone 152! But yeah, I will give credit where it is due. FMJ is an incredible boxing champion to fight at 147 and 154 and to have success in both. But he's trying to do things to make it harder on his opponent, that no one else would be able to do, after specifically saying he isn't the sort of guy who would do that when he was fighting Cotto.
we both want the same thing, i was so excited to see floyd announce he would fight canelo then when i herd 152 my first thought wasent "its still a dangerous fight and the toughest he can face (which i believe it is)" it was "o god now the haters have an excuse" floyd bashed catchweights that made no sense to me cotto v pac was unnecessary as was the margarito fight i cant remember the last time 2 title holders at the same weight fought at a catchweight but when the numbers dont lie i think anyone who looks at the sports weight limits and takes the consideration both fighters fight night weight and natural weight class will see the catchweight as a non issue canelo can make 154 very easily it seems so 2 more lbs should hopefully not effect him at all (we have seen fighters like oscar drop to a weight he had not been at for 7 years and looked like a ****ing zombie, but its his fault and his fault alone to sign up for it if he knew he could not do it) i dont think canelo at this point in his career would be willing to drain himself to fight floyd or anyone for that matter he is progressing VERY WELL as the future P4P and PPV star. if he came into any fight looking like oscar in the pac fight it would severely damage his fanbase (loosing the 0 and the casual fanbase love a good undefeated fighter) i can only theorize at this point if it will effect him or not because the fight has yet to happen but one thing we know for a fact is at 154 floyd does not look that good.. he got hit ALOT against cotto and seemed alot more "plodding" as a fighter which is suicide to do against canelo you cant argue alveraz dropping an extra 2lb will make the fight harder for him because even if the weight does not effect him at all or even if he rehydrates to 172 again it still ment he had to focus a little bit more on making weight but like i said before : we also know for a fact floyd has not looked good at 154 and the last version of floyd we seen there plays VERY WELL into canelos style (i say 154 floyd for this fight because he came in at 152 last time so id assume he will this time aswell)
yer its true but when a fighter is likely going to outweigh you 20lbs on fight night he is stuck in a catch22 situation his options are 1. come in at 147-150 (seems to be his NATURAL fight weight) and risk being outweighed 20lbs against canelo forcing him to employ alot more movement in which case no matter how well he puts on a defensive masterpiece and completely out masters canelo in the fight he will not get his props because for some crazy reason people demand he go toe to toe with canelo 2. he attempts to take away the thing making canelo so dangerous against floyd (his weight advantage). floyd could baloon up to maybe 154-156 and maybe come in with canelo having about the same weight advantage as ortiz did (theorizing of course). this then caters to canelo as floyd has pushed out of his natural weight class even further, hindering his movement and ability to be the defensive wizard he is capable of floyd for the longest time has always been in a no win situation and i honestly feel sorry for him, he has millions of dollars and the notoriety alot of us could only dream of but he seems to always be the bad guy (inside the ring) floyd constantly mentions things along the lines of "if i beat the baddest guy out there they say "you were supposed to beat him YOU FLOYD MAYWEATHER". the same nonsense spouting haters that say such **** dont realise how great they are making him sound. i find it amazing how people call him a cherry picker.. he always fights highly ranked fighters coming off good wins, even pushing outside of his comfort zone to do so and still wont get props for it? the guerrero fight REALLY pissed me off, people saying "floyds fighting a career lightweight!" im sorry the same "career lightweight" that has had 2 fights at 147 now, won both of them one of them was against a guy touted as one of the best in the division and he completely DOMINATED him? yer ok.. career is a career super featherweight then *Shrug*
This is the fight all of you claimed you wanted to see...right? And ya'll MF's have been bitchin' and complaining every since it was signed. Like I have said all along: "You can't satisfy HATERS!!!!"
Barrera, you're a real boxing fan. It's refreshing to see such interesting posts that make a lot of sense. I don't think FMJ is a cherry picker. FMJ fights tough dudes. No question about that. Which is why I was a little distracted when he demanded a catch weight after what he said about catchweights leading up to Cotto. See, I'm actually trying to like Mayweather, and respect him, but it's hard because of his antics. What he does makes it hard for fans to fully embrace him. As far as the FMJ - Guerrero fight, I hear what you're saying about how fans said he was a "career lightweight" and make it seem like Guerrero was just some bum after Floyd dominated him. Guerrero is definetly not a bum, and he is an accomplished boxer, but he also didn't know how to prepare for fighting Mayweather. (you know what I mean?) Guerrero also I think kinda peaked a few years ago and is slowly fading. as a lot of fighters do, not a knock on him, he's had a lot of fights. Also there was the gun issue at the airport that was in the news and kinda put a damper on Guerrero vs FMJ. You never got the impression that Guerrero really was going to win. Not that he was an easy fight for Floyd, but he really didn't present a real threat like Canelo does or even someone like Hatton did. Guerrero vs Mayweather really didn't have that big fight feel. Guerrero wasn't able to be 110% like Canelo showed vs Trout. But that said, Guerrero was no cakewalk either. It wasn't that it was an easy fight like a lot of fans said, it was just that it wasn't very exciting and he wasn't undefeated like Canelo.
