Broner-Paulie was a throwback

    I enjoyed the fight. It's fun watching a boxer use combinations and timing to make up for a lack of punching power and still make it very competitive. I think Paulie did a good job, early on I thought he was going to win it.

    True, but neither were a relative pro novice or jumped up two divisions when they fought Paulie, it's like giving Golovkin hard time for moving up and "only" defeating Adonis Stevenson on points when Darnell Boone knocked him out. Under the different circumstances, I thought Broner did quite well. I had Paulie winning 4 rounds vs. him, 5 against Cotto, and Miguel didn't fight at super featherweight 4 months before their match.

    I agree. I think Broner won clearly, and while I do think he should have pushed the action more, it was a decent win for a guy moving up. I do, however, think Paulie was picked specifically due to his lack of power.

    Dunno Des, he took Ponce's and DeMarco's best and didn't flinch. More odd than Paulie's power was Paulie's division in the opponent selection, nobody expected Broner to go welterweight. But then no big fight was on the table around 135 and 140 with all the money players either tied to fights or to HBO. In the end, Paulie brought a name, a title, a weight challenge, 10.000 fans and an exciting fight, I'd say Golden Boy played their cards right. Now Broner could face any lightweight, light welterweight and welterweight, and ppl. think he's vulnerable, so that will result in much anticipated fights.

    Perhaps. But I do think his lack of pop made him an attractive target for a guy dipping his toe in at ww. I don't think he'll be heading back to lw any time soon. Would love to him in the mix at 140 though.

    I'd guess that Malignaggi hits as hard now as PDL did then. Demarco probably doesn't hit that much harder.

    What they did was pull the move up in weight move, but against a guy who isn't hitting any harder than what you've already seen. Broner basically stopped fighting with a 15lb advantage and went after someone his own size who still couldn't hit. A smart move, and I won't complain because Paulie was also the most skilled fighter Broner has ever faced, and if they're trying to develop Boner they need to have him in with slick guys like that, it's been his weakness since he started. Even PDL outslicked Broner. I think Broner would currently lose to many power punchers, but facing guys with low power and more skill should help his defense a lot.

    He caught him clean punches, but they weren't nice. He couldn't phase broner AT ALL, which killed the fight for me. Broner didn't have to worry about anything besides landing some good punches a few times in each round because that's all he needed to do.

    It wasn't intense and it wasn't two-way. Never once did it cross Broner's mind that he could lose the fight. To me it basically looked like Broner was in some good sparring. He can repeat that fight again today, and tomorrow, and the next day.

    Broner didn't look as good as he should because of it. Against better competition he'll step it up, obviously. I'm not really a fan of either fighter either, in case you want you accuse me of any kind of bias.
