why have U.S. boxers always had slicker styles than the rest of the world?

    1) it was the Brits that started professional boxing.

    2) check the results throughout history when the Brits and Yanks face off. then get back to me. :good

Just trainers training differently, but I'm sure some of it is based on the general phenotype of the region. You aren't going to teach long tall slavics and Russians to get in close and bob and weave, so even Russians built like Frazier won't be likely to learn that style from a coach who trains a lot of guys like Kessler or the Klits.

My father is 72 years old, and as a very young man trained with Basilio and his handlers in New York - even they emphasized that particularly American style of head and foot movement that does not entirely rely on staying upright behind the jab, nor on peekaboo. In the 80s I remember him speaking with disdain about the "straight up" European fighters. The Mexican schools seem to be of two types: the macho attitude of going in there and relying on wearing down and chin and the technically supercorrect textbook style of Nacho with the high lead hand that never lowers, working everything behind the jab, and utilizing the uppercut even from the center of the ring. Obviously the modern world has evolved, but those old traditions die hard in a sport with the nationalistic history of boxing.

then there are stylistic outliers like Calzaghe, Pac, Jones, who just have a style that works for them and really don't fit to a pattern. The Midwest/Michigan boxers like the Mayweather family and James Toney do have a pretty regionally recognizable style.

Boxing wasn't **** until it came to the states. You know it, I know it, everyone else on here knows it. USA invented boxing and that's why were the best. Calling a couple of organized British street fights the "invention" of boxing is blasphemy. You must be from the UK.
