I might add, numerous Victorian regulations are up ****-creek & need prompt reviewing. Former (yonks ago) Control boss Bart McCarthy implemented changes to some regulations on trial over 12 months, with approval of then Sport Minister (former AFL footballer) At the end of 12 months, it wasn't followed-up & it wasn't gazetted, therefore void. One example:- Mandatory 7-day rest period between bouts, which is no longer in force, nor is a combatant disallowed to fight more than one fight on same day.
The Southern Area Title in the UK arguably has better quality matches & credibility than the Australian Title these days with so many novices & sub .500 boxers fighting for it across most weight classes.
Inclined to agree but what must be understood is there is a shortage of fighters in Victoria and for that matter Australia. In the instances you have pointed out, relating to them specifically. Ibby Balla is the only fighter rated in his division and his management have had a lot of trouble matching him,but this should not roadblock his quest to acquire a Vic title if his chosen opponent has fulfilled the criteria, which in this case he has. The same shortage of opponents has also befallen his brother Qamil and nobody in Victoria wants to fight him. Considering Qamils next fight after his Vic title fight is I believe for an Australian title his Vic title fight will be a good lead up to it. At one stage in my early boxing years I was rated 162 in the Australian lightweight division today there would be lucky to be that amount of boxers throughout Australia. These rules were brought in I believe so as not to deny a worthy champ a title chance through lack of opponents so as far as I am concerned you do the best you can with what you've got and that's what we try to do.
