good news for those of us that hang onto the memory of when amateur boxing was a sport worth watching. first the head gear went on and then the "single punch" scoring system - a couple of years ago this scoring system was adjusted- no longer did you have to get 3 judges to score a punch simultaneously for it to register a point - the 5 judges scores were collated independently and then the closest 3 were scored (eg 6-5-4-5-1 - would be 5-4-5 and total round score of 14) - mainly what this meant was that inside punches (only seen by one or two judges because of the angle) were scoring. it made things better, but wasn't enough.
well the purists have won out.
say good bye to the head gear and hello to the 10 point must system
yes its open for corruption but at least we have a chance to see two fighters going for it. instead of 2 fighters trying to score points. now we can see an aggressive boxer rewarded for making the fight.
it means the change from amateur to pro won't be so different too so we may see gun amateurs become gun pro's

Wow wow wow. The amateurs are taking off the head gear. I haven't boxed in a couple years but that's big news! I hope this means they stop calling every fight as soon as a guy is stunned as well. In 2011 I won the gg's at 178 they matched me with the winner of the 165 gg champ we met at 170. I trained my ass off for that fight. It was stopped in the first round, he was a big puncher ill take nothing away from. Him and I was a slick boxer, anyway I got hit with one good shot that dazed me and the ref stopped it. My family was pissed they knew how hard I had trained. I guess it was a new ref, but that's big news. Makes me want to get back in the gym. Hell I'm only 23

I've had my last two amateur fights without headgear and pro scoring. Love it. I do wish I got paid lol.

You think this will create more editing fighters? The type that dominated the 70s?

Oh I think this will improve the transition tremendously. Coaches will be forced to teach more D. This could be huge for the sport all around. I did hate when people would say "oh you wear headgear? So you don't really box." For the record competition headgear protects your head no more than wrapping a towel around your head. But this is great news

what about head butts though? won't that increase? I kinda think this might not be the best decision... I agree with the pro scoring though.

As things stand, we will carry on as we are (head guards and counting scoring shots).

I know a couple of regions have already had these issue put forward at their annual general meetings - The membership have voted to keep things as they are.
