I saw this fight live on PPV at a bar. I remember the guy beside me was routing for Pernell and thought Pernel was winning and I was listening to him wondering what fight he was watching. Oscar was landing the cleaner, more effective punches throughout the fight and in the 12th round, pernel danced the round away actin a fool when he should've been fighting and Oscar took that round. I don't think Oscar was ahead by more than 2-3 rounds but he simply just did more and was the aggressor. He also stunned Pernell once or twice with a huge uppercut around the 3-5th rounds. Pernel did have that ridiculous knockdown, If memory serves he landed his forearm on the side of oscar's head just in the middle of oscar slipping and put his glove down to keep himself up, but was ruled a knockdown. That made it close, but Oscar took the fight to Pernell and pernell simply didn't do enough to warrant a victory.

Now now, roy jones even said Pernell was still prime during his fight with Oscar and had only lost just a little step. Remember, Pernel was rated P4P#1 at this time.
As for Oscar, his speed gave pernel problems and he stunned pernell once or twice early in the fight which made Pea more tentative to throw. Oscar was a beast at this point in his career. Pea did a good job and by no means was an easy win for Oscar, but Oscar simply landed more power punches and you could see he was the one who wanted it more.

Oscar landed more power punches, that is why he won the fight. Not really tough to understand. Pea chose to dance and really didn't fight like he wanted to win. His eye was swollen shut, Oscar stunned him once or twice with massive uppercut and Pea went way to defensive. 114-113 for Oscar. Would have been 116-112 if it wasn't for that stupid slip awarded a knockdown to Pernell.

In no way was Pea prime, if you watch the lead up to the fight the talk was this was pretty much his last harrah. Pea hinted to be in better shape than pundits were discussing at the time, but fighters always try and sell themselves if only to convince themselves that they still have it.

Remember Pea wasn't on TRT, HGH, Roids like modern fighters (Pac/Marquez/FMJ/etc), which meant that mid thirtees really was the tail end of his career. Cocaine use didn't help extend his career either.

So Whitaker's eye was closed by itself? He lost, get over it.

Dude, he was still rated #1P4P! Jones even said during the fight, that Pea was still prime, just lost a small step.

Yea, you know those punches that actually have some heat on them? The punches that shut pernell's eye and had him stunned twice in the fight, one of those buckled his knees.
Do you know what a jab is? Well, pernell outlanded Oscar in Jabs, but Powerpunches overrule jabs. Especially considering most of those jabs were just throw away punches.

Lets see Whitaker knocked him down and Oscar could not land a punch, and Oscars face looked like he had been chasing parked cars all night ! Yea I would say sweet Pea won !

I had Oscar edging it. Had Pea been more aggressive, I think he could've pulled it off. Then again, opening up more offensively would've also meant giving up a little defense. Whitaker made his choice on how to approach the fight and it didn't quite pay off.

Whitaker always would lose to offensively capabale grade A fighters simply because his nature is to be to zoned in on defense.

If it was up to Whitaker you'd have fights stricltly scored on defense.
Fortunately for boxing fans, thats not how it works in boxing.
