Nelson swoops in and clinches. Nelson is cut over the left eye, from a punch. Nelson skips away, holding when Cuello rushes in. Big flurry to the jaw by Cuello, rocking Nelson who falls atop Cuello and grabs. The ref warns him for holding and splits them. Lead right by Nelson, falling in on Cuello. Jab by Nelson backing up, missing. Cuello runs in past it and barely misses a left uppercut. Nelson clinches. Overhands and uppercuts put in fervently by Cuello, but Nelson covers up and survives.

The man is only 25, beat the US hype Marcus "to much" Johnson, shot Zuniga, Aaron Pryor Jr (right after Jr. upset Librado Andrade) and had a draw with Isaac Chilemba.

Brandon Gonzales is a 29 years US fighter that I don't know much about either. And his Ko% is decent but considering the opposition should be better, he only got Darnell Boone and Don Mouton as "known" adversaries and they're known mostly because they took on good and great fighters but lost to all of them.
Don Mouton fought guys like Dirrell, Badou Jack or Maxim Vlasov while Boone fought guys like Andre Ward, Edwin Rodriguez, Adonis Stevenson,
Sergey Kovalev,Curtis Stevens or Erislandy Lara.

"Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen (whose last name means something close to "East Side" in Dutch...literally, "Eastern Houses" - so of course we must support him) has a heck of a right jab, maybe among the best p4p jabbing southpaws going now. He's got a very Gumby build as BSB said, and is a work rate guy with moderate pop but a preference for throwing lighter punches in bunches and mixing in drum solos on the body, so he kind of brings to mind a very pale version of Paul Williams. For someone who steps for ward and is willing to engage he keeps fairly responsible on defense and doesn't give up his usual height advantage even on the inside. All-around very solid talent heading towards being a top 5 SMW or maybe eventually LHW.

Brandon "Flawless" Gonzáles is a Mexican-African-American who at one point was the #1 middleweight in the US in the amateurs. He first started getting on television a few years back, and looked impressive but has failed to consistently land big dates maybe due to bad management. He actually has a better pair of victories than Boone & Mouton, the pair of top-shelf journeymen BSB mentioned. He beat Cuban defector Lester Gonzalez very handily when Gonzalez was still considered promising himself and beating lots of fellow prospects on the way up, although since then he went on to become a gatekeeper. His next time out he and teak-tough Ghanaian trial horse Ossie Duran had a war on ShoBox in which the veteran pushed him to his limits, with Gonzáles' defense falling apart by the end and leaving him resorting to frequent clinching. Admittedly, I thought Duran earned it close but clear and Gonzales received a bit of a gift. Bear in mind, Duran was coming off a couple of upsets and would only six weeks later have a FOTY candidate with very highly respected Avtandil Khurtsidze in another close, MD loss. So having fought on even terms with Duran on form as he's been is no black mark (although he technically ought to have lost his zero). He is trained by Virgil Hunter.

Oosthuizen is by far the best opponent Gonzáles will have faced - and only the second ever southpaw, after Lester Gonzalez (who is 7" shorter than Oosthuizen ) - so in terms of both styles and dimensions the South African poses a daunting challenge. If Gonzáles didn't learn from the Duran experience and focus on his problem areas to come up with a sound game plan under Hunter to play to his strengths, it'll almost certainly be his 0 that goes.

On the other hand, while Gonzáles isn't yet as proven or big a name as some past Oosthuizen opponents (former Showtime darling Marcus Johnson, banger Francisco Sierra, repeat contender Fulgencio Zuniga, top of the Aussie domestic heap Serge Yannick, and both of the kids who unexpectedly scored upsets over Librado Andrade: Aaron Pryor Jr. & Rowland Bryant) he might actually have more boxing skill and punching accuracy than any except Isaac Chilemba...against whom Oosthuizen drew.

I'll probably wind up picking Oosthuizen by close decision, maybe split or majority. I don't think he will need to worry about fairness being abroad in the USA. They're going to be @ Foxwoods, and Gonzáles is a West coast dude. In fact, so far his entire career has been fought on that side of the Rockies except for the one night in Atlantic City, the "close shave" against Duran. Besides, the event is promoted by Lou DiBella (did I mention this is the co-feature to Golovkin vs. Macklin??!) and Ootshuizen is the one signed to DBE. Gonzáles joined with Dan Goossen two years ago, which is still kind of small potatoes relative to DiBella or the larger players but was a huge step up from before. He was managed & promoted by Tommy Lane - son of referee Mills Lane - of "Let's Get It On" Promotions, a tiny operation based in Nevada. Like I said, he didn't have the handling to match his talent coming up. So on top of size, reach, style, and experience - Oosthuizen has the more big league backer.

However...there are some things giving me pause in thinking it'll be a cake walk for Tommy. I have to imagine a guy like Virgil Hunter is going to have extensively brushed up on Oosthuizen, watching tape and familiarizing himself to help cook up a workable strategy for Gonzáles to deal with all the challenges involved. This is his other prize unbeaten super middleweight pupil, after all. (his "plan B" in case that Andre Ward kid doesn't work out ) He also has the benefit of Goossen having stepped up Gonzáles' quality of competition, if not rate of activity, since taking over the reins two years ago. All three of his dates arranged by Goossen have included TV exposure - Duran on ShoBox, Augustama and Mouton on FNF - and provided him with a combined 24 rounds of valuable learning experience against non-bums. A trainer of Hunter's class ought to be able to bring a lot away from those experiences to use in the war room. Another slightly more irrational concern is the still-fresh memory of DiBella recently bringing another undefeated foreigner over here promising to propel them onto the big stage only to have it completely backfire. I'm not putting on a tinfoil hat and saying he sold Erdei out to Grachev or anything like that - but that scoring was ridiculous. Lastly, Gonzáles does have real pop and can punch sharply enough to make the most of it. Yes, his stoppage rate is low but lots of his opponents under both Lane and Goossen have just happened to be double hard *******s who don't simply lie down. I think Oosthuizen's chin is fine, but Gonzáles might reveal cracks in a layer we haven't yet seen. Nobody has tested it thoroughly. Chilemba can box quite nicely and land with high accuracy but doesn't possess thunder in his fists. Sierra and Zuniga can whack - but their skills leave much to be desired and they couldn't get past Oosthuizen's five-mile jab and defense. Bryant, Pryor and even Johnson despite the premature hype bestowed upon him were all too average to be serious threats. Gonzáles might be the guy who can time a real peach to exploit the drawbacks of having such gangly limbs (Red Squadron Luke Skywalker style)...and it's an old truism, the bigger they are...

Tommy does have a giraffe neck, like Jason Litzau...

That was supposed to be a war, and was anything but.

However, I really do think Oosthuizen vs. Gonzáles should be aesthetically pleasing based on their attributes, styles, and temperaments.

If we had been paying stricter attention the writing had been on the wall even a year or two earlier with La Bomba Rodriguez anyway. He was transforming himself gradually into more of a boxer, getting away from the slugging. As for Maderna, who shared equal fault in what a stinker they put on, I don't know what his excuse was. He is usually more exciting.

Unlike that one, I'm not expecting Oosthuizen vs. Gonzáles to be a slug fest but rather a nice tactical game of violent chess. Will Oosthuizen keep Gonzáles hanging out to dry on the clothesline, pummeling him with long straight punches and/or punishing body combos he can't avoid? Will Gonzáles be able to get close and check his chin with a pinpoint right hand? To me it's a lot more intriguing than Rodriguez vs. Maderna was, since that was only supposed to be Rock'em Sock'em Robots (and disappointed, badly it was more like R2D2 and C3P0 having a gay little tiff)
