who has the greater upside Golovkin or Kovalev?

    Kovalev since I think 175 and 168 gives him more potential meaningful fights.

    Golovkin can't really do all that much at 160, and I don't think he moves up in weight with great success or does so anytime soon.

    the fighter with the most skill and is more poised in there is Golovkin. so i'd say him.

    even though i think Kovalev is going to get beat by Cleverly, lets say for arguments sake that he wins, it will be pretty tight. i can't see any of the other 175's beating him. Clev is the best chance. the same with GGG, i don't really see any one that will beat him at 160. 168 is a different matter entirely though.

    Golovkin without a doubt, on top of being a murderous puncher he has sound fundamentals that colpiment his power. I can see holes in Kovalov's style that ward, stevenson and even b-hop could exploit easily. Don't see him going anywhere beyond non-linear title status

    Are Macklin and Campillo in different leagues altogether? Why is almost everyone so sure about this one? I don't get it.

    Because GGG already beat Bute and Dre Dirrel in the ams. GGG is 350-5 in the amateurs. Silver medalist. But the main thing: he has been on HBO! That is why people are so sure.

    Kovalev was 193-22 as an amateur. The Russian team was far more crowded than the Kazakh team. Kovalev won a Jr world title but as a Senior from 75, 81 and 91 kg classes he had guys like Korobov, Beterbiev, Mekhontsev, Chakhiev and Romanchuk ahead of him at different times.

    Truth is there are many guys like Kovalev and Golovkin over there that never get a chance to fight pro. Especially with an experienced pro trainer and influential Western promoter.

    Golovkin looks small to me, and so I don't think he would fair as good against the bigger guys at 168, think Ward and consider Froch, who has a steel chin. I just remember Abraham who could punch as hard if not harder than Golovkin but didn't have the same boxing skill. AA is thicker than Golovkin and he appeared small vs Froch and the bigger guys at 168.

    Kovalev is a big dude and isn't giving up anything physically at 175 so Im tempted to say Kovalev has the greater upside, provided of course he can take a punch?????? which we don't know??????? with that said there are a host of good fighters at 175 so if Kovalev can run through them, starting with Cleverly, he may have a better upside simply because of his size and the comp at 175, if Golovkin were at 154 then things would be different and I would chose Golovkin as the one with the greater upside because of all the fantastic opposition at 154 and also the the chances to mix with Sergio and Chavez Jr. when moving in to 160.

    Calling White top ten is laughable. Campillo was a top ten guy even if he didn't properly prepare for Kovalev.

    I won't argue with you that White's a top fighter, but laughable? He was rated as follows before the Kovalev fight.

    WBO 5
    IBF 2
    WBC 8

    (even Boxrec had him at 8 or 9 I think, not that it counts for ****)

    Although I also believe that the ranking systems used are indeed laughable, there actually aren't all that many top fighters at 175. I personally would have placed him 9-12.
    It's easy to forget he's only had the one prior loss and was considered a **** hot prospect B4 the George fight with 15 KOs of 16 wins. He was coming off a 5 win streak with solid, but unspectacular wins against middling opposition.

    Easy to say he's rubbish when you've recently seen him smashed round the ring, innit.
