Wilder: I feel like I have better power than Mike Tyson

Pointless comparison.

 

Bambi on ice? What are you in denial? Yeah Yeah I was at first as well. The big tall dudes are easy to BLINDLY HATE. The reality is Dontay is pretty IMPRESSIVE. So he is wild and looks worse when missing than others because of the huge distance his punches are delivered from? The reality is when he connects he can HURT anybody. The reality is when other prospects connect they CAN'T hurt anybody. All big guys LOOK and to a degree are more AWKWARD and SLOW in their overall movements than smaller guys. Takes a real fraction longer to SET, RESET and adjust to engage all of the ANGLEs of attack in the ring. Ones LENGTH will be slower in movement WHILE ad******g and RESETTING than the AVERAGE sized fella relatively speaking naturally. This is where I feel the "Bambi on ice" type of perceptions come from. Now take a look at Vlad vs Sanders?? Vlad was Bambi on ice correct? Well so what? That's just OUR perceptions of what a BIG DUDE looks like when he is finally cold ****ed and seeing butterfly's in his head. We all reacted to that as if Vlad was a FRAUD correct? Did you see him after Sanders hit him? He looked like a drunk kangaroo on stilts. Everybody that had BASHED Vlad's rising up the ladder proclaimed that Vladdy was SOLVED and thus finished RISING. Now MAYBE Dontay takes a unexpected shot soon and does a Bambi on ice routine so as we can all smile at his humbling by the HUMANITY we all have to deal with sooner or later. However, that does not mean crap. How he deals with that humbling is what will decide where he goes from there. I don't mean at the time although that does matter as well. Simply put if he is on ***** Street and just goes down then its how he DEALs with his first loss after its over that will decide where and what becomes of him.

My thoughts on Wilder? He has more athletic ability than Vlad and that's saying something as not many 6.6 240 plus type dudes have that kind of ability. To me Wilder has the chance to be GREAT if he can keep ad******g to WINNING ROUNDs rather than WINNING by hammering his opponent with the biggest shot he is capable of landing. Basically IMO he has a real chance of being great if he can ADAPT to staying within himself. Just like Manny taught Vladdy to do so well. Manny's fight philosophy was to CONFRONT and deal with YOUR WEAKNESSes rather than use ones STRENGTHs "hoping" to DENY them. If Dontay can travel down this type of path I see him having the ability to be champ in future even if he has to go through Vlad to do it. So to recap, I don't believe Dontay is ready to fight the champ NOW, I feel he has the ability to be the best if he continues to develop. Has his career thus far taken a slow and tomato canned path thus far? Yep you bet. However, has anyone seen what he did to these tomato cans? There are only a few dudes in the boxing world that could of blown all those tomato cans out like Dontay has. The guy is something other than what anyone has yet seen. Tyson had a similar situation coming up albeit his rise up was PLOTTED, PLANNED and PREPARED for with focused timing from his training camp. Regardless Tyson's first 10 or so stiffs create a BUZZ where everybody is gossiping about Tyson and why? Because he KO'ed his first 10 dudes? Nope, it was because of HOW he KO'ed those first dozen or so dudes. Nobody had seen anyone walk through tomato cans with such raw ability. It was IMPRESSIVE. The champs of the time couldn't of walked through those tomato cans more or as IMPRESSIVELY. So the naysayers claimed the usual LAWs stating that it means nothing until Tyson gets into the ring with a non can. Well when Tyson got in the ring with the top of the division he still hit them as hard as he hit the tomato cans and as everyone had already began BUZZING about Tyson had a out of this world type of power and hand speed we just had not seen before in the way Tyson could deliver it. Tyson was short, fast, compact and powerful in a way we have never seen a heavy weight before. Dontay is tall, powerful and fast in a way we have rarely if ever seen a heavyweight before. Guys such as Tyson Fury IMO simply cannot be compared to Wilder simply on ABILITY alone. Tyson Fury has a great left hook and is a big tall guy that has trained hard since he was in diapers. He is SOLID but to me he is NOTHING special SAVE most 6.7 type of dudes can't throw a LEFT HOOK like Fury can. All things equal I would take Wilders RIGHT over Furys left hook in a heart beat as Wlider can SOMETIMEs land that right from distances that are IMPRESSIVE whereas Fury has to work the angles more to land. As well I think Dontays left hook is WAY better than he is given credit for yet.

As for thus threads POINT of TOPIC regarding Dontay saying he has more power than Tyson, well I think its quite possibly TRUE in "someways" if not in all ways. By this I mean to say that IMO Dontay with his EXTRA LENGTH may generate more overall POWER than Tyson did. Or maybe close to essentially the same as Tyson did. That said Tyson's power was in short faster bursts than Dontays. So its a COMPLEX question to answer without being more specific. Thus to be specific if Tyson and Wilder were to SET and take a free shot at a non moving target with pressure sensors in it its very possible in their primes Dontay hits close to as hard as Tyson and possibly even harder. What does that mean? All it means is Dontay has unbelievable power so if he can hit you its going to hurt you.

 

And this is the problem with feeding a fighter such woeful "competition" (I hesitate to use that word because it usually implies that both sides have a chance of winning) - he thinks he's actually achieving something by ko'ing the likes of Harrison.

Wilder is obviously starting to believe that his record is impressive and the danger of this is that they move him up to contender level and he finds himself in way over his head.

He has some speed and power and he's not as refined as some of the top HW's, those are things he can improve on. I just think he's alil too overconfident like some ko punchers tend to get then they stumble with someone that can take their power. ALWAYS happens. Tyson was devastating at the top level. Wilder has not shown that.

The only reason he feels like he has better power than Tyson, is because of his glass chin. Everytime he throws a punch and connects, his fragile mandible feels the effect of Newton's Third law of motion, almost knocking him self out in the process.

Wilder reminds me more of Michael Moorer at Light Heavyweight. You don't go 28 and 0 all KO without having a lot of power. I'd say he does have more power than Tyson but not necessarily more skill just yet, he's easy to hit and his chin is a question mark.

 

Please even against these stiffs he doesnt have half the power of Tyson. Those who try to compare his power to Mike need to watch some of Tyson fights.

 

What do you mean "not necessarily" ... you could argue for power (since we haven't seen whether he can or can't KO a high quality guy, it's up for argument), but his skill level is not even close to Tyson.

 

So, next fight for Wilder should be against Butterbean.

 

Wilder said "They couldnt have picked a better opponent for me". He is right. His opponent is a former HW WBO title holder and people remember him from fights with Brewster and Briggs and forget that this guy has been very inactive and on a serious decline since those fights. In the past 7 years he has fought 6 times. Meaningles 2 victories and completely dominated in loses. He was out for 2 years after his KO loss to Briggs when he steped up to face Nicolay Valuev. Valuev looked great in that fight, dominating him in every round. Thats the best I have seen Valuev. Truth is Liakovich was completly shot at that point. He was later getting fights because of his name but he regressed very badly. Absolutely perfect opponent for Wilder.
