GG's footwork and how quickly he cuts off the ring is above that of KOvalev. Plus he has better amateur career, so it's him who stands out in terms of technique.
Matthysse has the better resume so far. Matthysse also has the better competion in and around his weight class. Saying that, Matthysse might have the best "skills" of them three. As for raw power its a close one between Lucas and GGG.
Mathysse is fighting in a more competitive division. He gets my nod as the best of the 3 non US hopes.
Was really impressed with how Kovalev boxed the other night. even more so than GGG's recent performance Skill Kovalev GGG Matthysse Power Matthysse GGG Kovalev
GGG's ability to cut the ring off is as good as it gets today. Lucas sometimes chases and can get caught off balance, but it is amazing the leverage he still gets on his shots. I need to see more of Kovalev on the big time stage. Everything I see I like so far.
GG isn't fighting on the same level as Mathysse. He's cutting off the ring against scrubs in a dead division.
Lucas may well have fought better competition in Judah, Alexander and Peterson, but his combined record against the 3 is 1-2. As I alluded to in my previous post, Lucas gets wild at times because he doesn't have the best footwork. If Danny takes Stephen Edwards advice, both from Philly he will expose Lucas's footwork.
I think Mathysse takes a better punch of the 3. He's the only one that has been in with anybody that can bust a grape.
GGG has the most skill and the most natural talent of the 3. I don't think that's much debatable. Matthysse's skill is underrated though. Lucas has very good offensive skill in terms of his arsenal, and how he varies his attack, and his defense is above average. Matthyse does a good job of blocking/parrying shots, which is something he doesn't often get credit for. The thing that all 3 have going for them is that they know to utilize the tremendous power they have. Many punchers don't, and just plod around looking to land one home run shot at a time (see Randall Bailey). However, GGG, Kov, and Lucas all have the ring IQ to know how to properly set their opponents up for the deadly power they possess.
In terms of power, I'd def say Kov is in the 3rd place. Which is no shame, as Kov is a devastating puncher. Kov has the type of power where literally every shot he lands hurts you, and the clubbing effect can have you beat down in a few rounds. But with Kov, it's the more of the accumulation of several big shots he lands that leads to KO's. Whereas with GGG, and Matthysse, all they really need to do is land one solid shot, and you could be sleeping for several minutes. I don't think Kov has quite THAT type of power.
GG is still wearing training wheels at 31. At least Mathysse is fighting real fighters in a real division. Kovalev is just as unproven as Golovkin.
Matthysse has been around, but GG and Kovalev have hit the scene basically at 30 years of age. It seems Froch did also. Canelo and Broner are still pups in this game. Were these guys(Kov and GG) as good as the younger Broner and Canelo are at age 23? Iyo
