    Hi everyone,

I'm 21 and I'm going to be starting boxing next month for the first time. Am I too old to think about training up to compete and take it seriously? I'm going to put my all into it and I'm aiming high, but have I left it too late to make anything of it?

    Cheers,
    Xagan :)

Of course not. 21 is young. I'm 20 and hopefully going to start competing this year.

    Good luck!

Amateur or Pro? Some good, successful pros have had next to none if any amateur experience

Far too old. Try something else, like chess.

    Definetly not.
AIBA have just changed that 40 year is the limit for amateur, at least here in Europe. So good luck, just keep the guard up.

You can have a good boxing career, but you will never be great. Sorry. You can be like an earnie shavers or ken norton at best, that is about as far as a late starter can get into boxing.

No your not starting to late, i know someone who started boxing when they were 18 they didn't have many fights in first year, 1 i think so they joined a better club and got quite a lot of fights. By the time they were 21 they were boxing at semi pro and getting paid.

Sorry for the super late reply everyone! I'm currently travelling through the USA, so it's been a bit hectic, but I'm going to be starting up at a boxing club when I'm back home in early September.

By the way, I'm looking to become professional one day, is that completely out of the question? I understand that generally, it's impossible for you to answer this, as it'll be completely different for everyone. Bear in mind that I already have a good level of fitness, and let's just say that I take to it, I become decent at the sport quickly, and I combine that with a super good nutrition intake and lots and lots of training, is starting at the age of 21 too late to one day become a paid professional boxer?

Thanks so much for your input so far, I really appreciate it! :)

You answered your own question within a few sentences.

Just wondering, why does this even matter? You're asking for opinions off random people on the Internet. Opinions on things like this are entirely pointless. If these people say yes, you could become a great professional boxer within a few years even at the age of 21, it may not become a reality. Some guys may say it's impossible. Are you going to quit because in some people's opinion you can't do what you want?

Simple as if you want to do it go for it as hard as you can, **** everyone's opinions.

If it helps I'm 36 and I'm starting boxing in a couple of weeks, ok I have no intentions of becoming world champion but you're never to old to do anything you set your mind to.

Start now, try your hardest and see where you get.

There aren't any boundaries, no one can tell you you WILL or WON'T do this or that.

Of course you can start. Obviously your extremely unlikely to be as good as Rocky Marciano, but he started boxing at 24. Carl Froch turned pro old, same with Price and Stalker. Anthony Joshua another one that started boxing old. I'd say if you wanna have a crack at it, just train hard and eat the right foods. See how far you can go. You'll see early on if you've got it.
