Gabriel Campillo: What went wrong?

I'm trying to track down a copy, but those who've seen it also say he should've lost Shumenov I. So, while he definitely got jobbed in the rematch in a bad way, it sounds like his record against Beibut should've still been the 1-1 that it is.

 

Oh yeah, I'd definitely still agree that he's a quality fighter that had more breaks go against him than for him overall.

 

This is what I heard as well, but I also ain't seen it. I mean WTF? - he get's a gift in Beibut's backyard, then robbed in the US -where he (Campillo) usually trains.

Perhaps they were trying to make the most $s from a rematch clause or summit? Beibut's career path has been extremely weird and he apparently has a lot of Kazakh mineral $s behind him. Fuk only knows....

Campillo just seems to have been one of those guys who could mix it at top level, but every chance he got he was either fukk unlucky or straight up jobbed.

The guys the 'Chico Guapo'ain't he?...I recommend a carrer in lovin' rather than fighting. The guy's already making a living outta getting f:smoochcked ffs.

 

Well he is older now. He was robbed in two fights he clearly won. That can change a guys mentality and focus. He didn't even look loose against Kovalev, he was completely dry, and had just flew in from overseas like a couple days before the fight. That shows a lack of seriousness. Against Fonfara, he just wasn't in shape. Again, that shows a lack of focus and dedication. You go 12 with Shumenov and Cloud, but gas against a weaker lighter punching opponent in Fonfara.

 

He is older, has a wife and one or two daughters, his family and friends are here in Madrid...

Against Cloud he had a full and hard training camp in Oxnard, about three months, and was extremely well prepared. And he got jobbed and I think he had some issues with his family or with Sarmiento&Co.

I think it because he trained in Spain for his next fight against KOvalev and travelled to USA three days before the fight. It was very strange...

And now he has trained in Spain and travelled some days before but...

I think his head is not more in boxing in a so high level. I just expect him to get a couple of pays on tv and retire.

 

I don't really rate Campillo that highly so I don't think much has gone wrong. He's been robbed a decent bit, but the reality of the situation is that he's a good boxer-type for the division with the downsides of a shaky chin and lacking power that hold him back from being among the elite. I could still, under the right circumstances, see him winning a paper title as things stand, but by that same token I could see him getting stopped in gatekeeper fights a la the Fonfara fight with a few wrong turns.

 

Thank god not everyone is taken in by campillos overrating.

You can't just say-he is amazing but he hasn't got power or a good chin or the guts required..........

 

He was only robbed against Cloud. He was gifted againt Shumenov in their first fight, for the second fight the favor went to Shumenov.

The Murat fights were not robberies, both fights were very close.

A lot of people like his ineffective feathery pitty-pats, but Campillo wasn't strong enough to keep punchers like Kovalev and Uzelkov off him.

This thread is the first I have EVER heard that Campillo won a robbery in the first Shumenov fight, which of course was held in Shumenov's native Kazakhstan. The only controversy about that first fight was the administering of the postfight drug test (apparently through the fault of the promoter), nothing about the judging.

As for Campillo, technically he has always been a joy for me to watch, he is one of my favourite fighters in recent years. But being based in Spain with who knows what level of training and sparring competition, not having the plus power that can swing fights and impress judges, having fought so many true road fights in so many different places, and having had so many disappointments along the way, I just think it all has started to wear on him. His having a family now is another big reason why boxing may not hold the same appeal for him anymore. Rumours were strong he flew in late for the Kovalev fight and was still jet-lagged in the ring, and I am sure I heard he also flew in from Spain very late for the Fonfara fight. Add in how badly he gassed in the Fonfara fight, and you wonder about how good his camp was. I just think Campillo is transitioning to the end of his career. If so, I will very much miss him.

 

Campillo just didn't put in cardio for the fight. He was easily outboxing Fonfara, but ran out of gas.

 

What are your Shumenov's personally ball gobbler? The first fight with Shumenov wasn't a robbery. The second fight with Shumenov was clearly a wide points win for Campillo, but corrupt judges felt otherwise.

 

Close fights that he couldve gotten the nod in is a better description. He's feathfisted, so he's not gonna get alot credit for his body of work in the judges eyes when he's simply scoring. He's got to show some effective agression in close fights. Can't give away early rds looking to counter or start quickly and fade when a judge is seeing any kind of momentum swing.

As for wrong place wrong time with Kovalev.....there would NEVER be a right place or right time for him to fight KOvalev. He'd be starched 1000/1000 times, anywhere or anytime in his career.

But yeah, he's always right there in the top 10 talentwise, and yeah, he did take some tough Ls.:think

 

Campillo easily beat the fecal matter out of Cloud! Kovalev very easily destroyed him though..............

 

Campillo is a jamboree bag. Sometimes seems to be able to compete with the top and then he has life and death struggles with C-level fighters.
