Yesterday a friend and I were talking about how much boxers can make. After explainig to him how most boxers don't make as much as the few we see on TV, he asked something to the tune of, "Do boxers turn away high purses?" When I told him of Mayweather turning down 8 mill, his jaw dropped. He asked if anyone else has turned away that much or more?

As far as I can recall, Mosley turned down I THINK 7 mill from DLH for a third bout. Other then that, can't think of anyone close.

Can any of you think of a time when a fighter turned down crazy money?

Hopkins and Roy both turned down about a 15-20 mill split at least

Hopkins turned down $6 mill for a Roy fight, but got $10 mill against Hoya instead. That's another thing that should be mentioned. Not just how much a fighter turned down, but what they got from another fight instead.

he could have fought Roy and ODLH, why did it have to be one or the other?

Because Roy had already been knocked out by Tarver by the time Hopkins fought DLH. He turned down the Jones offer because he thought he was getting low balled. Everyone dogged him, but then he got $10 mill for fighting Oscar.

Probably the largest purse turned down was Lennox Lewis to rematch Vital Klitscko. Estimates were from 13 to 20 Million.

I don't think that qualifies as a purse. I meant a legitimate offer being made. To the other opponents rep as well.

Yes, he could've, but he turned down the offer because he though he should've gotten more, and he did get more with the DLH fight.

Okay i see what you're saying. What I'm saying is that he could have fought Roy for 6 million and Oscar for 10 million. Rather than just Oscar for 10 million.

even if there was never an official offer, he still declined an absolutely massive payday

Like Smith said maybe up to 20million

Hindsight 20/20, he probably coud've. However, he didn't know about the DLH fight at the time. However, he felt that he was worth more than what they were offering, so he turned it down. It's the same reason Mosley turned down all that money to fight DLH. Fighters turn down career high paydays all the time.
