Don King is one of the greatest promoters of all time simply because he's put together some of the best events ever, and he was personally successful despite not having the ins that a lot of others in this sport have. However, most fighters he's worked with have come to dislike him or even hate him. His one downside to the sport, aside from his legacy among fighters - which you can take how you want - is that he's been accused of helping manufacture fighters like Vaughn Bean and of manipulating judges, officials and rankings. The race thing is stupid. If anything, being a black promoter helped his career - hard to imagine him managing a lot of the fighters that he did if he were not black. That documentary of him out there that portrays him as some sort of pro-black underdog fighting against a white industry is off base. The only exception - and no disrespect to Arum, Goossen, Mike Jacobs, Larry Merchant, Max Kellerman, HBO Sports execs, Bert Sugar, Cosell and a lot of others in the biz - would be that he may have had an advantage if he was part of another minority group. But either way, he's a smart guy, who was a fierce capitalist, which drove him to deliver great events and cards and that's why he was successful. He loved success, loved making money, and he delivered.
Exactly. And let's not forget, this parasite prevented many fights as well, while he was ripping off the guys who actually DO the fighting left and right.:yep King is scum, a parasite on the sport of boxing. Hope he dies and goes to hell soon.
Yesm I saw that.............. Don King is losing power, but he sure had a hold on boxing for many years.
Just recently watched a documentary called KLITSCHSKO. There's a brief segment on how Don King tried to woo the brothers into signing with him. So King is sitting at a grand piano masterfully playing some classical tune which kind of impressed the guests until one of the Klitschkos walked by the piano and noticed that it was a self-playing piano. That to me is Don King in a nutshell.
King was what 80's boxing was all about. Corrupt yet brilliant. There is no doubting Kings intelligence and cunning. This could only have worked in the US.
King was great for promoting boxing to the masses but as a human being he is scum and most/all of his fighters over the years would attest to that. He's a clever con man/with no heart and was in boxing to make him the most money possible.
He's the only guy I've heard of to be the promoter of a world champ and take 90-95% of their winning purse
I don't post often but talking about that other minority group to: http://www.youtube.com/embed/ra3htXJeB4o?feature=player_detailpage There's a reason so many are in boxing!
