boxing should be banned, of course.

and boxing thrives and is fun and I wouldn't want it banned.

These two thoughts co-existing in my head I have no trouble containing. Its what life is, a hubbub of conundrums.

A ban would send it underground and never stop it, of course.

I agree actually. I've grown increasingly distasted with boxing for the very reason stated in the article. I barely watch it anymore. It was similar with Howard Cossell and many others. I wouldn't be against banning it.

 

You are confusing me. If you contemplate banning boxing , what are you doing on a boxing forum?? Wouldn't a medical forum be better suited for you?

 

Any other examples of "brain damaged" NFL players killing themselves out of the tens of thousands who have played in the league? The national suicide rate in the US is like 12 per 100,000... I'd be willing to bet it's actually lower amongst current and former NFL players.

 

Government has the right not to sanction it however.

 

I'm slowly leaving it. I don't think I average more than 1 post in 3 weeks nowadays. It's always been my favourite sport. It's just that lately I started to think that I can't put up with the dark side of it anymore.

They should look more into banning wars if they give a **** about people.

 

Or football, which is statistically more dangerous than boxing and not a tenth as fun to spectate nor as great & noble a sport. (to partake in, obviously notwithstanding the ever-present and inescapable seedy, exploitative aspect of the sweet science)

 

There are much greater dangers worth banning than boxing.

Also most boxers will spend 5 days in the gym every week. They are some of the healthiest specimen on Earth.

 

As somebody whose done a good amount of research on the topic of CTE (for a layperson, anyways), I can't take anyone seriously who says boxing should be banned while applauding the NFL.

American football is much more insidious because the NFL's done a marvelous job of selling the sport as safe for kids and being family-friendly despite the obvious dangers. The end result is thousands of kids with permanent brain and joint damage and traumatic injuries. 12 high school football players die each year from football, over 60 of which over the last 20 years have been from brain injuries.

Boxing isn't safe. But, today, it acknowledges what it is. It's honest about what it is. The boxers know it's a dangerous sport with a surplus of shady businessmen and politics.

Football plays both sides of the fence. It sells violence and safety all at once, and has done it so well that people don't realize putting your child on the gridiron is more dangerous long-term than putting them in the ring (although I certainly wouldn't recommend either for optimal brain health on a child's developing brain). The difference is that the violence in football is much more sanitized, and that gets misconstrued as safety.

I'm not surprised to see another person take the easy way out and attack boxing instead of taking on The Shield.
