thanks for sharing this video In Floyd's case, he gets them custom made by Grant. I believe that guy standing behind Floyd in the white henley is the founder of Grant.
If they are custom made, why does he need to wait until the day of the fight to try on the gloves? Surely he could do these in the weeks approaching the fight?
Guys who like to parry like Floyd and Hopkins always favour Grant gloves,so it's pretty much a formality for them,whilst renowned punchers tend to favour Cletos. There are often advertising considerations as well,so if a guy has a deal with say,Everlast,then they will be made available for the pick.
for something as important as a fighters gloves when it comes to selecting them you would think hed get to test them out on the bag instead of just shadow boxing with them..
remember when RJJ threw a fit because they wouldn't let him use his maroon grant gloves. he didn't go through the NSAC.. lmao btw, the gloves are sealed in fresh brand new. never opened
Cleto Reyes - Punchers' gloves, little padding, **** if you're Jeff Fenech and have dodgy knuckles. They're also weighted around the wrist so you can get some slug on your punch. Everlast - Padded, good if your hands are ****ed. Good for parrying punches, good for smacking your opponent without knocking him clean out. Grant - Don't know enough about them, as far as I can see they're a half-way house between a Cleto and an Everlast glove. Please feel free to add to my meagre synopsis.
You'll also see that most top fighters spar with big Winning gloves, because the protect the hands more as they're heavily padded and don't do as much damage in sparring,and that's why Morales wanted them for Garcia. Cletos are very stiff when new,so I may be wrong but that's why fighters get plenty time to break them in. Myself and Bogotazo are in the process of trying to clear Margarito's name on this very basis. Those gloves/padding weren't loaded, he just hadn't broke the gloves in properly.:hey But real defensive stylists tend to favour Grants as they are perfect for parrying,whilst Cletos have less padding and more wrist support,clearly favouring the puncher,but not ideal for using for constant training as they are designed more for actual competition.Again this is why you see many Mexican punchers using Winning gloves for training. As for how they pick them,sometimes big name older fighters nearing the end will have a clause written in,but they will usually be picked from a selection of the big names,with sponsorship(i.e Froch with Lonsdale,and he often keeps them on after the fight for a photo for future ads) often a factor,and Adidas gloves are often the main option in Germany for obvious reasons. As someone who loved Adidas gear when I was younger, I got 2 pairs when they launched their range and found them sadly disappointing.
