Can anyone actually explain what Canelo's gameplan was against Mayweather?

If Khan beats Alexander which isn't exactly guaranteed then he would become IBF Welterweight champion and a fight with Mayweather could then be made for a unification battle and one that could sell pretty well too especially with the promise of a knockout from Floyd which hasn't happened legitimately(not counting Ortiz) since the Ricky Hatton fight.

Anyone that watched the Alverez Vs Shane fight could have seen that .. Canelo was very dis-stressed after getting a cut above his eye after the head butt with Shane.

For a fighter with over 30 fights he should have not reacted that way. Right then and there, I knew he was not on that level.

Basically, he seemed to think he could employ a more successful version of the strategy Cotto employed.

As others have said, he's not a JCC-style pressure fighter, he likes to jab, land a counter right-hand and go to the body in spurts. The fight against Trout showed his qualities as a fighter but why anyone thought they'd translate to success against Floyd is beyond me.

That kid Alvarez was waiting all night long for Mayweather to lead with his straight right so he could counter with a vicious shovel hook (he did it once). Mayweather thew the ultimate ****** wrench and completely abandoned his straight right and threw jabs and left hooks all night. Alvarez' corner was completely useless in ad******g. So was Alvarez.

If a slugger is what you think Alvarez is YDKSAB.

Alvarez is a fast counter puncher by nature in a stocky muscular body prone to exhaustion. This is why many knew all along that Alvarez had absolutely no chance.

I thought he executed his game plan:

    1) Be tough at the weigh in
    2) Rehearse "I was born ready"
    3) Execute Oscar's blue print

    He lost just like Oscar

It looked like he transitioned between a few phases.

At the start of the fight Canelo tried to work off a strong jab. Unfortunately, Mayweather had the same idea, and the speed difference meant that Canelo could never establish his jab. Mayweather established his and was able to use it to knock Canelo's head back effectively and occasionally add a power punch behind it.

Afterwards, Canelo switched it up and tried to stalk him and just throw a lot of punches. He actually landed a few shots of note, but he was consistently being countered. For every 1 punch he landed, he took 2.

His third switch was to try and counter Mayweather. He backed up against the ropes and tried to time his punches so that he could catch Mayweather coming in, but Mayweather was too fast. Mayweather would lunge in, hit Canelo with a few big shots, and then jump right back out before Canelo could counter.

The last stage was the desperation one. Canelo was trying to land just one big shot. Mayweather saw this and fought even more cautiously. Canelo stalked him around the ring, but was seemingly only able to hit cameramen and air. At this point he probably won a round or two just because Mayweather wasn't engaging him as much. The fight was already won.

    Agree.

Also Canelo and his team were not willing to "risk all" to win and live to fight another day.

That type of **** won't wash with Mexican fans though...despite JC jr getting pummelled by Martinez he kept plugging away and nearly got Sergio out of there in the 12th.

Same with Margarito against Pac and Marquez against Pac.

After that pathetic performance from Canelo, Mexican fans will never come out for him again in such huge numbers but they'll always love JC jr more win or lose.

I can't say for certain what Canelo's ultimate Gameplan was, but it started out with the idea that he would stay within Floyd's reach pretty much all of the time whether Canelo was throwing punches, or not. When I saw this, I almost cried. I mean, crafting a plan that can only work if you are faster and more elusive than Floyd was not the way to go. Canelo fought Floyd's fight and lost - like they always do.
