Floyd haters: Isn't it about time to discuss him in the same breath as SRR?

Even a guy like MOnzon who is considered by most a top 15 fighter of all time. He has some very good wins at 160 against guys like Emile and Nino, but he also fought a bunch of bums in that division. He was a long standing titleholder so he deserves a lot of credit for that, but does he deserve to be rated so high when he never had an interest to try his luck at any other division?

When you talk about the ATG's they have to have been dominant in more than one division, except for HW's (i.e. Louis,) who obviously can't move to other divisions unless they weight drained themselves to Light heavy which was almost impossible. Carlos had many opportunities to go up to light heavyweight and prove his worth like Duran did by leaving LW and moving upwards, but Monzon was more than happy to just stay at MW and fight whoever was considered the top guy at the moment.

That's why I can't have him ranked higher than Floyd, especially knowing Floyd has moved up through 5 weight divisions and beaten the best at every stop (excluding JWW- but Hatton didn't seem too keen to fight him in 2005 when Floyd was campaigning at 140, especially after the Gatti detsruction.)

Zivic wasn't eager to defend his WW crown against Burley, though. Basically, every champion chose to avoid Burley if they could...for good reason. Dude was a beast.

I think Floyd is in a league with anyone in history when it comes to skill set. But the needless retirements and failure to fight Pacquiao, Paul Williams, prime Cotto, Margarito etc mean that it's hard to rank him as highly as his talent probably merits. For me though he is a definite top 30 ATG and suspect he'll creep into the top 20 by the end of his career. He won't trouble SRR for the number one spot but I do believe that he isn't far off being in the same class as him in terms of ability - I'm talking pound for pound of course, I don't think Mayweather would be a match for him at Welterweight

Had no need to impress anybody, xR. (Been a boxing writer 'n paid columnist since the 80s) Have only wanted -- over the years -- to tell fans as vividly as possible about SRR ('n other ATGs) in the early 40s.

Everyone is missing the point, JG is suggesting Mayweather's skills are as good as the greats. He makes good/great fighters look bad. He is in the same vein as SRL, Hagler, Hears, Duran, Benitez etc.

Enjoy him while he's still around. :conf

Not even Sugar Ray Robinson, first he needs to get to Sugar Ray Leonard.

Get back to this discussion when Floyd has beaten anybody as good as Duran, or wait Hearns, ok wait, maybe Hagler.

Not to mention Leonard had beaten Benitez, Duran and Hearns before he was 25-years-old !!!!

It's so weird that I hate Mayweather like ****, but people on here are so blind to actual boxing.

Mayweather smashes all the records, and he turns away legendary fighters and makes them look amateur. Mayweather is probably the most talented boxer of all time, he's just not as exciting as some of the greats.

    A couple of things:

    * Robinson never lost to a sub 500 guy. Most of the guys he lost to in the last five years of his career were still of decent caliber (Downes, Giardello, and Denny Moyer, for example, were all future world champs). Even at that advanced stage, you still had to be pretty good to beat the guy.

    * Instead of losses (which appeared more often on fighter's records because they fought more often), focus instead on ranked contenders. Even through SRR missed a few (Holman Williams and Burley being the two major omissions), SRR fought a ridiculously high number of them during his run toward and time at the top. Villemain, Fusari, Docusen, Abrams, Jannazzo, Basora, Costner, Bell, Dykes, and California Jackie Wilson were all rated contenders at one time or another. That's in addition to guys like Gavilan, and LaMotta. Hell, Henry Armstrong, though past his prime, was still rated highly and occasionally racking up big wins when he met SRR.

There's quality to go along with quantity. And if SRR weren't the goods, any one of them could have inflicted a loss or two on his record. If Floyd fights these guys with the same frequency that SRR did, he would have to do extremely well to emerge from it without a single loss.

    * There's footage of Ray out there. There's undeniable proof of his greatness. And there's footage of the guys that he beat too..and in a lot of cases (like Gavilan and Basilio and LaMotta), that footage indicates that they were pretty great as well. This isn't a case of extrapolating greatness simply because there are a lot of great fighters on someone's resume. As the catch-line of one of my favorite TV shows once said, "The truth is out there". If someone wants to look beyond boxrec and find it, they can certainly do so.

All that being said, Floyd has a space reserved in my Top 30 even if he never wins another fight. He could go even higher, depending on who he faces going forward.

I regard him as the number one at 130, and someone who ain't an easy out for anybody at LW or WW...Robinson included. Floyd's great...no doubt about it. I just don't think that his greatness should be predicated solely upon the notion that it's because he never lost a fight; and I don't think his undefeated record automatically means that he's greater than other fighters who suffered occasional defeats during their career.

I am a huge Floyd fan but beating Alvarez is only a small step up.
Truth is most of us knew he was going to make Alvarez look bad.
Now if Floyd could finish the 4 fights with Garcia,Broner,Badley,Pac,Lara,Mattysse,Thurman.
A few of those guys and win the way he did last night then I would be willing to argue for GOAT status.

No because despite everything Floyd still avoided certain fighters or waited until they looked bad before facing them. There's no going back without a time machine. He also has atg timing in WHEN he fights people.

Anyone genuine threat was never faced head on an example being pre margarito cotto or why not fight dlh when he was younger so on and so on I could go on all night.

ATG's face the best in their PRIME they don't wait until they start to look bad before facing them.

How is the best boxer of his time (PBF) not deserving of being mentioned with a fellow best boxer of his time (SRR)?
