Did Floyd/SHO really lose Saturday?

Pac. Maybe Garcia but I would not like to see him get wasted like that right now. Only real challenge in which they can seel the idea of Floyd Mayweather possibly losing to me is at MW. Martinez or Golovkin would be cool to watch.

 

this is a good point, but, I dont think they lost. I have two friends who ordered pay per views separately, both casual fans at best, who were thoroughly disappointed, but floyd is such a household name at this point coupled with the fact that both he and the cable network he's working with are such magnificent hype machines that his fights will always be purchased. some won't live up to the expected gain, like his fight with guerrero, and others will. The problem both he and showtime have are finding an opponent that fans will find to be a big enough threat to defeat him that they will be interested enough to shell out the necessary cash for the event. only one fighter below middleweight exists in that regard, and that's golovkin. people would pay to see him face GGG just because of the perceived possibility of a GGG upset knockout victory, but the chances of that fight happening are for a variety of reasons, very slim.

 

Garcia would get owned because you can't box with Floyd unless your a better boxer going in and Danny certainly isn't..

I think Devon and Matthysse are Floyd's biggest threats at 140-147

 

floyd hasn't had a competitive fight since like JLC with the exception of Cotto.... his PPVs have all done well since.

Matthysse style would give Floyd problems as long as Matthysse eyes can stay open lol

 

Obviously Show did not make this deal to lose money, but lets say in the worst case scenario that the rest of floyds fight yield 850-1.1mil and they end up losing. Couldn't you agree that even in this scenario, Show will come out ahead in the end now that they are the premier network for boxing... You have to look at the future as well as the present, and after floyd retires Show will more likely than not have a line up of well hyped bright stars that will produce profits.

 

I think Mayweather got more fans form the fight. He took a fight against a monster and made him look like a cupcake when everybody knows he isnt.

Mayweather-Kahn Mayweather-Garcia and Mayweather-Broner can do a mil buys. other then that everything will probably 750 k to a Mil.

Mayweather so big now that he can possibly do a Mil buys on his own now, and thats saying alot!!

 

It is true that they will have to have at least one not so good fight next which won't make much. I expect to see garcia fight again soon at 147 against someone that people know, then Floyd will have to fight a crap fight like Khan or Alexander while waiting on danny to build up a little more.

 

Showtime made this deal so they could have a payoff in the future by being recognized as the #1 boxing network, which will cause there channel to gain more subscribers. That's why mayweather is with them. When Showtime put down the huge contract HBO wasn't going to top it. Why would they? They are already recognized as the #1 boxing network, they knew they would lose money on the PPV's(which I believe showtime plans on) if they offered a more lucrative contract to Floyd Mayweather. They made the smart decision to try to weather the storm of the "Showtime Boxing Blitz" by building up lesser fighters in hopes that casuals won't switch over in time. Showtime is hoping this builds their brand to the point where they can over take HBO.

 

I think Fliyd will sell we'll but may lose viewers as the PAC vs Floyd hype disappears if he didn't fight Canelo and fought Khan or Alexander it would have done sub one mil buys

The real loser is Alvarez. Many boxing fans felt Canelo was in too deep but could or would be the toughest opponent in years. He did awful maybe worse than Guerrero and the fight was a snoozer

Haven't seen Mexican reactions I know they are loyal but his lack of fire and failure to go out guns blazing probably caused a huge blow to his reputation as he looked unwilling to go out on his shield or risk it all like past Mexican warriors like Chavez did coming back vs Taylor or JMM did after rd 1 vs Manny

 

What does that tell you when the measure of a successful PPV is 2MM buys? Only one fight has crossed that threshold.
