Hello, I've been boxing for almost 2 years now and I have recently started lifting weights, but I started to gain too much weight from it so I cut most of weight lifting exercises except squats.

Does doing heavy squats usually 5 reps range affect my speed for boxing? Or is it good to do heavy squats? Because I have been mostly doing body weight exercises for past months before lifting weights. And also how do i position the bar when squatting to make it not hurt my back?

    Thank you.

I won't go into how it will affect your boxing, but when I do squats I have some of that foam that is used for insulating water pipes that I wrap around the bar to help with the discomfort of the bar digging into my shoulders and upper back.

When you buy it, it is slit along the length so you can wrap it around the pipes and if you get the stuff to fit 3/4 inch pipe, it works out fine. Just position the slit away from where the bar will come in contact with your body.

Pay attention to your nutritional intake cause thats why youve been gaining weight not because you are lifting weights.

Thanks for the reply guys, but I also have a new question regarding my nutritional intake, because I have recently came back from a 1 month lay off and I have gained over 15 lbs, 165 to 180 now, because I've been eating a lot of junk during the vacation.

And right now I have hard time cutting out a lot of the junk food out of my diet and also portion control so it's very hard to lose my weight again going from 180 to 165 again. Any tips regarding diet would be nice, thank you.

Yeah. Cut out the junk food and control how much you eat. Clearly you know the problem. Fix it.

So you use a tampon. If you have the bar resting correctly on your traps there should be no discomfort at all. It's important to be able to feel the bar properly when squatting heavy.

    This be true.

You're either placing the bar wrong or you have no traps whatsoever which would be something you need to sort out.

Lifting weights - Beneficial (assuming you are doing it correctly for your given purpose)
Pad on the bar - Aka Tampon. If you can't handle a bar on your back you may want to reconsider boxing.
Losing weight - Burn more calories than you take in. So eat healthier, or work harder, or both.

Weighted squats is the real deal, as it activates so much of your body.

If nothing else, do them because they're really beneficial to your overall strength.
Don't use the tampon, it will be painful in the beginning but you will eventually get better at it.

This is a public forum where people voice their personal opinions on various things. My personal opinion is, if you don't have the intestinal fortitude to go the the discomfort of squatting without a pad, then I question how much punishment you can take in any physical realm, so boxing is an interesting choice.

when i`m boxing, punishment is a normal thing and i will take it no problem, but when i`m squating only wanted punishment is pain in my legs. It really has no matter with boxing if you squat with or without a tampon.
