Oh c'mon you guys, D-Rod was completely helpless in there. Sure, physically he could have continued, but all that would have happened was him getting more beat up. To me, the most telling sign regarding the validity of a stoppage is how much the fighter getting stopped protests when it happens. Rodriguez seemded to make some half-hearted complaints, but he wasn't exactly outraged. He knew what the was coming for him and accepted the fact that he was outclassed.
The ref has the power to use his discretion to give an 8 count or stop the fight then and there.Delvin is a good fighter but was clearly going to get seriously hurt if the round continued. He was buzzed at the bell ending the second round.Good and fair stoppage. He lives to fight another day.
This^ He'd never recovered from the shots at the end of rnd two that'd put him out on his feet. If the bell hadn't have rung, the wind from Miguels swings alone woulda knocked him over. He still looked dazed coming out in 3. Yeah, perhaps the ref coulda let it go on, but it woulda just been putting the guy in harms way. It was obvious he could no longer defend himself properly, so for me, good call. It's irresponsible of a ref to prolong the inevitable.
Rodriguez said in the post fight press conference that he felt the stoppage was early and he wanted to fight on. I would have liked to see the ref give Rodriguez a count at least to see how he responded. But Max Kellerman said a minute or two after the fight ended, Rodriguez was still wobbly on his feet, so I guess that somewhat justifies the stoppage. I don't think dude ever recovered from that hook at the end of the second round (even though he claimed he did in the post fight press conference). Dude went to his corner wincing and blinking. I think that punch essentially ended the fight.
Well, it was a mismatch, but on the other hand, if you are going to stop a fight so soon, why bother making it in the first place? I like Delvin, but he is an ESPN fighter so he was never in Cotto's class in the first place. Not sure what this proved for Cotto, I think they just wanted to get him a win so mission accomplished.
You should never go by what a fighter says in this cases. Not matter what they always want to continue. But brain damage are permanent. So....good stoppage
It was a quick stoppage, but the way the fight was shaping D-Rod seem to confuse and out of his element. He was getting hit with hard shots and to many of them. This stoppage probably would have prevented another topic of why the ref didn't stop the fight and let them continue
Poor observation skills son, You think the ref didn't check up on him after the last round? He was badly shaken and was blinking his eyes after he took that shot on the closing seconds of round 2.
The stoppage was premature. That's not even a tiny bit debatable. Secondly, a KO was coming shortly at any rate. But the lad should have ben given the dignity of a count and a little more time.
