Every time simular things like last Saturday happen a bunch of people starts shouting for the creation of a Super Heavyweight division. But apart from all the standard issues that come with the creation of that there are even a lot more that in my eyes do more harm and probably doesn't even solve the biggest part of the problem. Standard issues: - The current HW division is spread thin as it is, so why make intriging fights like Fury vs Haye impossible? - There are too many weightclasses already. - Possible creation of a division in wich big men punch obese men's face in. My personal issues: - Where do you draw the line? Weight mentioned is usually about 235-240, but most of the athletic big men wouldn't have any problem at all to make that weight with prior day weigh-ins. Wlad certainly makes it, and if the line is drawn at 240 even Fury might make that. So what prevents them to hop divisions and still dominate the "little" guys? - Why call it a Super HW division while the HW division has always had his attraction because it were the biggest and strongest facing eachother? In the ye olde times when people were running around in greyscale smaller guys fought bigger guys too and many times came out victorious. Nowadays when a HW is about 215-220lbs they're called blown up Cruiserweights, so why don't let the big guys keep their original historical name Heavyweights and call the smalller guys Super Cruiserweights wich essentially they are now. - Do the Heavyweights want that themselves? We already know it would prevent a good number of big (money) fights from happening if there would be a split up. They can easier win belts of course but they would mean even less as today. What do you guys think?
and dilute the shitty division even further? No point. The problem with the fight was not the disparity in size. I'm not gonna talk about the fouling that's been covered by everyone. The main issue is the lack of talent and athleticism of the smaller heavyweights. Obviously Wlad and Vitali are very good at what they do and they use their size advantage to devastating effect. But there is a shortage of genuinely skilled athletic "shorter" heavyweights that would have the know how to get inside and counter the klits height and reach advantage. Too many heavys nowadays come in fat and out of shape and lack the belief to win.
Can someone wanting the split-up to happen please come up with an argument why? BE, you must be able to come up with something I guess...
the superheavyweights arent that good...apart from the k bros...so whats the point...basiclly when it boils down to it people only want this so they can watch current guys who arent good enough to beat the current champ fight for belts...its a joke of a discussion
Creating a new division would do nothing other than create a division between cruiser and super heavy that nobody would want to fight at. Anyone at this weight class would just artificially bulk up to fight at the more lucrative super heavy division.
I think creating a weight division between Light Heavy and Cruiserweight would be more pressing. I don't know how you can be expected to jump from 175 to 200.
Exactly. "Small" heavyweights have the choice of either fighting at cruiser, or fighting at heavyweight where the rewards are greater but they often have a size disadvantage. In recent years Haye, Adamek, Chambers, Gomez, Byrd and Toney have all been top 10 contenders who didn't have to fight at heavyweight. All made the choice to do so, rather than being forced to move up. The likes of Povetkin, Chagaev, Ibragimov and Boytsov could probably have made 200 with a day before weigh-in, but why would they bother? For all the talk of super-heavyweights dominating the division, there have only been four elite big men in the last 25 years - Lewis, Bowe, Wlad and Vitali. The common denominator is that they had skills as well as size. There was talk during Carnera's reign of setting up a new division, as he was a 260lbs guy often fighting people less than 200. He obviously was battered by Baer, and that was the end of that.
Yeah, once the Klitschko brothers are gone, there won't be talk of a super heavyweight division. Might take another 5 years though to see the back of Wlad. He can still make loads of money without having real challenging fights. I'd actually like to see Arreola vs Haye, Fury or Chisora but those would only be big fights if they were for a belt.
Hardly any discussion going on here. I added a poll, to see if there actually are people who have good reasons why there should be such a division. What it looks like now is that the guys that shout for it just don't like who's ruling the division and want their favorite fighter to fight for a HW belt and actually have a decent chance to win too.
I voted no, but still fancy shifting the cruiser limit upto 15 stone (210lbs). There's already too many damn divisions, I'd vote for merging a few myself. Perhaps to sell it you could call cruiser HW and HW super-HW tho. A 210lb limit means that anyone who's big enough to be still be quick and mobile for 12 rnds should be able to make weight, while the super big Guys can kinda do their thing with each other.
Indeed^, a legacy issue which can't only be easily resolved without either adding a division or reshuffling evreything from at least mw up. It tends to be forgotten that CW was a result of reasoning like the TS - simply an attempt to split up HW into 'big' heavyweight and 'little' HW. Fukkit. I vote we overhaul the whole system, and let's go metric while we're at it, it's a big pain in the ass trying to work in factors and multiples of 14. :good 100kg = (near as dammit) 220lbs and just work backwards from there (though personally I'd cut about half the divisions - the preponderance of multi-divisional champions indicates that they ain't really necessary). Oh, and bring back same-day (in fact pre-fight) weigh-ins so the divisions actually mean something.
I can really find myself in this. Fewer weightclasses and a new and better dividing of the weights. :good
