“Mischief” was the most prominent word that Dennis Hobson used when Livefight spoke to him earlier today about the news that his prized asset, IBF bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell has “cut all ties” with the Sheffield-based promoter.

At this stage, the wounds were still fresh for Hobson but he had this to say when LF spoke to him on the phone.

“I need to find out what the foundations are of this. I need to see if there’s any mischief being made although I’ve got an idea where it’s coming from.

“I don’t have anything else to say just now. I will be making a statement through myself or my legal representative that will make people sit up and take notice.”

Rumours persist that McDonnell, 27, will join forces with Matchroom Sport and that the first defence of his world title, that he won so memorably in May against Julio Ceja, will be on the Nov 23 show headlined by Carl Froch and George Groves at Manchester’s Phones 4 U Arena. However, nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Unfortunately, McDonnell was unavailable for comment at this time. A source had informed us recently that relationship between fighter and promoter had broken down and McDonnell was looking for pastures new.

With plenty fighter and promoter disputes around at the moment, it's safe to say that this one could run and run.

Would make sense for him to go to Matchroom. Frank's going to be livid though.

Hearn must have jumped in with an offer to turn McDonnells head...I dd say that I thought it was strange that he wasnt going with Matchroom when I heard about Hobson signing the BN deal.

It is rumoured McDonnell will sign for Matchroom tomorrow.

Whether people like it or not, Hobson delivered a UK, Commonwealth, European and World title when there were others higher in the rankings and that is a fact.

As long as Hobson paid McDonnell on time I dont see how McDonnell gets out of his contract.

As soon as McDonnell won the IBF title, a normal standard BBBofC contract allows the promoter/manager an extension due to the fighter winning a title.

Its going to be very interesting how McDonnell is going to squirm out of it.

The excuse of no TV deal is not enough to tear up a contract when the promoter/manager has delivered the titles mentioned earlier in this post.

McDonnell has been very badly advised.

Looks like he has had his head turned he had a great win against Ceja but cast your mind back....

Lots of us said at the time sticking the fight on Primetime PPV same night as the Burns v Gonzalez SKY fight was a bad move on Hobson's part £ wise should of had it on the Friday night. The fight must have really cost him a lot to put on.Tough business any idea how long McDonnell's contract has to run?

Has he been inactive enough to get out of the contract? 5 months since he won the fight yet there is no fight lined up. I would rather McDonnell joins Matchroom than another promotion but Hobson deserves some loyalty after bringing a World Title fight to Jamie's home town without a TV deal.

Funny all this business because Hobson was on the radio the other night saying it cost him a good few hundred thousand pounds to get the Mexican over rather than having Jamie travel. Week is a long time in any sport.......

All well and good paying to get him over, but what did he do to further Jamie's career after he won the world title? Nothing.

I was nearly mentioning the fact that Hobson was only on the radio the other night and then this newsbreaks not that Hobson was the best promoter the world has ever seen

Jamie Mcdonnel is one of the best boxers we have over here.

The fact he is not on tv and no one knows who he is, is criminal.

The Ian Napa fight changed it all for him

Think we can all agree that Dennis hasn't shafted McDonnell. It's right what Hearn says is about setting yourself up for life and unfortunately Hobson can't do that. McDonnell must know he has a limited time left as a world champion and will want to maximise it as much as possible!

From what I've heard it's a two way street that one.
