Totally agree.

The common comparison is with Froch who has a good cv but no win of Froch comes anywhere close to the Hopkins victory and I would argue not the Eubank or prime Kessler wins either. I think it's a shame that Calzaghe's is overlooked on the basis of a lack of depth.

 

Calzaghe is britains greatest fighter in the modern era no doubt. Resume's? Dont care. Calzaghe would do to froch as he done to lacy..easy money.

 

yep i agree people love to try and plain down a fighters achievements.
Calzaghe did have a stretch around the ishera pudwill fights where he was fighting guys way out of there depth but he was quality.
The wins you list are all top class - yeah this guy might have this might have lost there etc but Lacy, young up and comer predicted to beat joe by many, Kessler legist world class unbeaten fighter and hopkins.....Then guys like reid - i always think if reid and woodhall etc were American Joe would get more credit from some

Let's not forget Brewer beat the **** out of Echols (robbed) who then beat the **** out of Hopkins. Roy Jones wanted nothing of Brewer in the 90s and he was robbed against Ottke. Calzaghe/Brewer was an all-out war!

 

Lacy and the manner of the win. Kessler and the way he adapted. Hopkins, who most certainly was not shot as he keeps proving. Winning all the belts in the division at one stage or another.
No need to point to anything else, that's an exceptional record by any measure.

Those who appreciate boxing knows he is an elite talent.

 

He was unlucky in a way in that he met Reid, Woodhall, Brewer and Mitchell a fight or two after they lost their world titles. Mitchell in particular lost his in a very dubious manner. If he fought them all six months to a year prior he'd have beaten four current world champions who were on a run of defenses. Really in those fights he had everything to lose and very little to gain.

Kessler arguably before his prime, would young still

 

Yawn. Calzaghe. Yawn. Froch. Yawn. RESUME. Repetitive, boring, pointless argument.

 

During Calzaghe's established years, 2000-2008, the only fighters of note at SMW he never faced were IMO Mundine, Ottke, Bute and Beyer. I think most boxing fans would agree that he would beat all 4.

There were few fights out there for Calzaghe for much of his career, people forget that Calzaghe wasn't much of a name until after the Lacy fight (when he was 34yrs old). A long time world champion, that hardly anyone has heard of is simply bad promotion.

The good era's of the 90's and 10's sandwich his reign. However as the OP points out, so many of Calzaghe's wins are underated!
