2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships - Online for boxing fans

    - Quarterfinals start today, 23 Oct (in less than two hours from starting the thread).
    - Semifinals on 25 Oct.
    - Finals on 26 Oct.

    Time is fixed to afternoon (EDT 04:00, GMT 08:00) and evening sessions (EDT 09:00, GMT 13:00).

    So far, 30 countries out of 160+ made it to 1/4 out of prelims.
    Here are the favorites sorted out by the number of boxers left in the tournament up to the moment:
    Kazakhstan - 9 boxers
    Cuba and Russia - 7 boxers
    Italy, Azerbaijan, India, Uzbekistan and Ireland - 5 boxers
    Brazil, Germany - 3 boxers
    Ukraine - 2 boxers (quite a fail due to their leaders turning pro)

    Ams bring back excitement as it moved closer to pros: no headgears, new rules for seeds (strong opponents meet not at the start of the tournaments), count by rounds not by points. Enjoy :)

    The following is a list of countries sorted by the number of boxers that reached 1/2 stage today:

    Kazakhstan - 8
    Cuba - 5
    Russia - 4
    Azerbaijan and Italy - 3
    Germany, Brazil, Ireland, Uzbekistan - 2
    Costa-rica, Venezuela, Aljeria, Ukraine, Mongolia, England, Argentina, Wales, and Thailand - 1

    I've seen all the fights and I can say that there was maybe one gift to the hosting country in 75kg. Other than that there were weaker opponents.
    Also the seedings were made conveniently up to this point, so that they didn't meet the other favorites early. Lets see how they deal with it in the semis.

    I've heard from a lot of people that Kazakhstan are getting the nod in close decisions. I've heard the 'theyre good but not that good' too and I wonder would they have as many medals if they weren't fighting at home. With the new scoring system there is bound to be more contraversy too especially when there may be three close rounds.

    We Irish have 2 in semis with 2 potential winners in Ward and Quigley. Ward is goin for his 3 world amateur title and is only 19.

    Ramirez, Savon and Petrauskas got robbed bad today.


    Ward-Ivanov was stopped in the 1st round because of a cut.

    Arkhypenko - don't know
    Poyatsyka- injured
    Gvozdyk - injured
    B.Shelestyuk - injured
    Berinchyk - is m.i.a. apparently
    Ishchenko - chose not to go
    HW - not allowed to compete because 1 and 2 were injured and replacement wasn't registered with AIBA in time.

    There are two other stand outs for me: Yeleussinov and Alimkhanuly. The first one has already gained good experience and is ready to conquer the top in the next Olympics, here is his classy fight today against the London Olympic bronze medalist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbebCrMbd7Q
    He lost to the Italian in the Olympics and this was his revenge today, although I remember even here on ESB people thought he was robbed back then.

    The second one is a prospect who has a lot of potential but lacks endurance.

    Believe me I thought Gvozdik won the fight too back then. I was first who didn't like that win. Saying that, I still think there was no obvious help on the current WC apart from 75kg. You can check yourself, the fights are on the web, though I doubt you would spend time watching those :)

    Alimkhanuly I liked. He beat Juratoni who I thought should of at least medal'd at the London Olmpics.


    India was a big surprise for me at this WC. I never knew they did boxers and they've already started making their mark in the top amateur level.

    Shiva Thapa got jobbed by that Azerbaijan slap boxer
    And that Light-Heavy Sumit Sangwan has got damn quick hands.

    Another one that stuck out in this tournament was that Costa Rican boy Maestre who beat the Russian. He looks athletic and has a style that would work well in the Pro's

    Why yes it is. The quarter finals at the World Champs is a big deal Mr.. KillerKovalev? Reggie Kray? or Vinnie Jones? whatever your new racist account is :lol:



    Just think, 5 Indian boxers went into the quarter finals!! Next Olympics their probably gonna go home with a gold medal in each category!

    He has to beat the Cuban first. Who happens to be rather good

    Ward is a phenomenon though, still only 19 its pretty mad.
