Fight that never happened 2010: Ivan Calderon vs. Johnriel Casimero

Haven't done one of these in a while...and while it might seem random, this fight crossed my mind for a couple reasons. First, I noticed this weekend that the well-traveled IBF champion, Johnriel Casimero successfully defended his title against Felipe Salguero. Secondly, the match I'm looking forward to the most this weekend is Hernan Marquez vs Giovani Segura.

Now, to set the background, Johnriel Casimero was the mandatory for Ivan Calderon for a time. I believe at one time he was temporarily moved to make way for the Calderon vs. Iribe match. Casimero and Calderon at one point even had a projected date in May 2010. However, as we know, Calderon took on Segura, which was probably the biggest fight in the lowest weight classes and got blown away.

What if history played out differently though? What if instead of Calderon going straight into a fight against Segura, he took on Casimero first? Calderon had been showing serious signs of decline for some time, even getting dropped by journey Jesus Iribe in the 2nd round of their fight. Casimero on the other hand was a bit of a novice...only 14 fights at the time and the only warm body he fought was Canchila (who handed Segura his first loss) albeit knocking him down 3-4 times.

Would Segura have had enough left in the tank to administer a schooling on the inexperienced Casimero? Would Casimero have had enough in his locker (and Calderon be declining enough) to overcome whatever problems Calderon presented (and thereby Segura's profile doesn't get the big boost and maybe Casimero wouldn't be a world traveler).
