It's a two-way street. People who dismiss Vitali entirely because of his loss to Lewis annoy Vitali's fans, and Vitali fans who try to rewrite events to excuse his loss to Lewis annoy Lewis fans.

It would be one thing to defend Vitali and say how well he did against Lewis at short notice and point to other moments in his career that prove his credentials while saying how unfair it was that Lewis didn't give him a second chance after he earnt the mandatory shot - that would be fair - but its another thing entirely to go on about how his loss to Lewis wasn't legitimate and how the referee and the doctor conspired against him or that he was "green" or "past-prime" when they fought and how he's "never really lost" and is the "most invincible fighter ever".

The attitude exhibited by Vitali fans in these kind of debates becomes less one of promoting his merits and defending him from undue criticism and more one of ingoring all his flaws and failings and excusing him when he proved lacking.

Do you believe he was done as a fighter? Scared of a rematch with Vitali? Nothing left to prove?

    Post your thoughts here.

He had nothing left to prove and his wife was very adamant that he retire. I think he went out at the perfect time. He was still on top of the sport but he looked vulnerable enough for him to realize that he wasn't the same fighter.

Combination of age, lack of motivation, & Vitali he beat him the first time in a thirlla so why risk your legacy fighting him when you clearly was getting past it. But overall I would say he retired because of age

    Didn't want to rematch Vitali.

The public demanded it, he couldn't fight anyone else.

Essentially he was painted into a corner.

Lennox was one of very few champions who beat everyone he ever faced in the pro ring.
He took on his mandatory #1 challenger on 10 days notice to stop the card being cancelled. Lennox was overweight & barely 80% ready yet he STILL beat Vitali TKO 6.
Was there any challenge from Wlad???? No sir he'd got the hell out of Dodge He wanted no part of Lennox. Who else was there to give Lennox a competitive fight??
No one he'd already beaten Vitali to a pulp.
Lennox was also under presuure from his Wife & his Mother to retire. He had nothing left to prove. He retired at the exact right time He's a very wealthy , healthy , happy family man. In my book he was the best HW champ since Ali
Enjoy a long happy healthy retirement Lennox you deserve it

ROFL you have no idea about boxing do you. The Kirk Johnson that Vitali faced was overweight under trained & in no shape to fight he was just there for the paycheck he didn't even try.
The Kirk Johnson I knew when he was with Curtis Cokes in Dallas Tx would have been a far different story he could well have beaten Vitali

Funny how he was fat and lazy only 1 year after one of the biggest wins of his career over Tyson.
