This is why I re-evaluated Jones after the Tarver and Johnson, even though they came when he was past prime. The chin is often the last thing to go, and those knockouts illuminate why Jones wouldn't fight the truly big punchers in his prime--even after those punchers were already spent.

It may sound odd because he took the punches and won the fight but when Ike Quartey came on late and started banging Fernando Vargas with right hands I thought I saw something in Vargas that looked like he may have chin issues. Just the way he reacted to those blows.

Surf, you beat me to the punch...My dad and my uncle [old enough to see Stanley Ketchel train at Van Cortland Park], saw the Ruby Goldstein/ Ace Hudkins fight in Coney Island...They lived in the same neighborhood as Ruby Goldstein, saw most all his fights, and Goldstein kod or dropped every
opponent he faced prior to his fight with the little known Hudkins...In the first round Ruby's right cross dropped Hudkins flat on his back, and Ruby walked to the ropes and waved to the cheering crowd, when he turned around and there was this tough Nebraskan coming toward him full of fight...Goldstein was demoralized that this tough guy survived his best right cross, and soon after
Ace Hudkins exposed Goldstein's glass jaw...Goldstein went downhill after this defeat and retired not long after...My mom would tell me years later my dad came home shocked and in tears...But Goldstein became a top referee later on
refereeing the top fights, until the fight he refereed, :good where he allowed
Benny Paret to absorb a fatal beating at the hands of Emile Griffith in 1962...
