No wonder Tom Leoffer said that HBO is fully backing Golovkin. But the bad thing is that Golovkin gets to take the Berto route.
Yes, he has the demeanor, always smiling, polite etc, not to mention the scariest punching power out! Maybe the hardest hitting P4P fighter in over a decade. And alot of people don't know he has an amateur record of 345-5 so the man can box your ears off if he wants.
Little Max Kellerman said Golovkin would have trouble being a star because not many boxing fans were from Khazakistan. Hey Little Max, what language was Golovkin's translator speaking? Did you hear all those Khazak's chanting "Triple G" in the stands?
I heard one of the commentators on HBO say "There are only two seats left" for whatever that's worth. I'm still shocked at how many "Khazakistanis" were in the crowd chanting "Triple G" All with Russian accents too! :huh
Confirmation to HBO that they are on the right path with him, I would think. Anecdotally, it seems to me that he is becoming known now to the semi-hardcore and crossover fight fans. I think he can become a star as his English improves, and they can book him for promotional events and interviews with more general sports programs. Pretty sure thats why he is learning English. I think he will do well, he has the charisma. And a lot of the chanters were probably German accents.. apparently a lot of people from Germany where he lives also came.
It's still more people than Ward can draw in his own hometown or on TV. Ward/Dawson did 1.3 Million on HBO.
So, didn't that boring Hopkins v Dawson do better last year? Are HBO's numbers going down if this was the 3rd highest? Chavez Jr does better than that every time he fights.
