King offered Lewis his largest purse to face Tyson and Lewis refused. The money King paid Lewis was court fees, not step aside money.
-I apologize, that was a rushed post that didn't really make any sense. A true mess. I was thinking one thing and typing another. -Lavorante was no can, footage is rare of him but he did get good press for KOing a still highly rated Folley and was rated as high #3 in the world before Moore destroyed him and essentially ended his career as it was taking off. Folley hinted he hit as hard as Liston for what it's worth. Patterson also declined a decent payday to face him. -From 50-55, Moore's success at LHW and HW is interchangeable. The only difference is at LHW he didn't have to Marciano for the title. -I take issue with Moore being labeled as a "decent" heavy, he has better credentials than that.
His technical perfection and athleticism certainly didn't vanish or fail him against heavier opponents. He had wins over four of the top heavies of the time in Henry, Valdez, Satterfield, and Charles; and likely would have faced Marciano for the title had he not been knocked out by LHW Champion Moore. That's hardly middling success above 175. Absurd to use this fight to bash either man, two masters fighting evenly at an elite level. Whatever context you want to put on it doesn't belong with Dempsey's Layne/Charles III head scratcher. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pip0EAmqA8I
IMO, Ezzard Charles I gave Marciano his toughest defense, much tougher than Moore's. That first Charles fight earned the former champ a second shot at the Rock.
Again, only morons took Kings offers seriously, just to get subsequently ripped off. What was a fact though was King wanted options on Lennox, who was, and still is far from a moron.
Lewis was no moron and King's hold on the heavyweights was seriously eroded by this time. Years of Lawsuits from Witherspoon, Tyson, and tons of bad press finally began to break his vice grip on division. The Klitshcko's turned from his offers too. Everyone knew what he was about by the mid late 90s. Shame Cooney couldn't buy a fight in 80s without signing with King.
Holyfield took the offer. That's how bad he wanted to prove he could beat Tyson. Lewis might have brains but he got no guts. I guess Lewis dips out when the going gets tough. Did it against Bowe. Did it against Tyson in '96. And did it in a rematch with Vitlay.
When again did Moore secure his second title shot against a guy who did not have the title nor have the name Ali? I still haven't got that one figured out.
I agree with this. Charles put up as spirited an effort as I've seen from anyone. Going into the 11th round, it was still anybody's fight. It was at that point when Marciano started to really take control, but Charles was stubborn and game to the end. Moore had Rocky down of course, but in that fight he was beaten down and taken apart piece by piece. He didn't offer the same level of resistance as did Ezzard.
Well whoopdee fvcking doo for Holyfield. That might explain why the brainless tosser has got no money, and was trying to get meaningful fights when he was nearer 50 than 40. Whereas Lewis still has a personal fortune of $125 million, and growing.
This has done been covered. "-I apologize, that was a rushed post that didn't really make any sense. A true mess. I was thinking one thing and typing another. " It was a rushed post from a fatigued brain on a work break. But feel free to discontinue all other elements of the discussion to dwell on an admitted gaffe I already apologized for. If only you could man up and admit you made a mistake about throwing Harold Johnson under the bus.
I recal Witherspoon signed a blank contract with King that screwed him out of millions. Newman didn't want King pulling one over on him and Bowe, and the conflict lead to Bowe dumping the belt. King and Lewis could of played ball if they really wanted the fight but King knew how to get Lewis the title the easy way and without any risk. A year later Lewis turned down 12m to fight Bowe. Burt Sugar didn't have Lewis in his top 20 HWs.
Again, Lewis was never going to " play ball " with a big mouthed, fast talking moron like King. Why would someone with the intelligence of Lewis give a toss about someone like King, or some cigar chomping, drunk Jewish scribe like Sugar? Have you ever even bothered to check out Lewis's chess playing credentials? You might learn where he got his quiet, deliberate demeanour from.
No problem! It just seemed wildly out of synch with the rest of your statements. I actually went back to some old papers to verify that no minor belt had been on the line for that fight. Not a huge Johnson fan, sorry. He deserves to be in the Hall but I am not going to say I like him better than Moore or Tunney or Spinks, the lightheavies that come to mind when I think of those toiling a division higher. And again, I was obviously nit-picking on Marciano because I still have him in my top 8 or so. It's just that I have Lewis higher. That's when we break out the scalpel and split **** hairs.
I think Harold Johnson's heavyweight resume is better than Tunney's. But I am a Harold Johnson fan boy.
